In 1917 in Paris French girlJeanne Hebuterne encounters Italian Jewish artist Amadeo Modiglianiwhile attending an art academy and falls in love. Jeanne shacks upwith Modiglianiand her Roman Catholic parentsvehemently disapprove because of his alcoholism, drug use, andJewish heritage.
没多久珍妮怀了孕，产下一非婚生的小女儿。莫迪利亚尼老不归家在外纵酒寻欢。珍妮固执己见的父亲将小女婴自珍妮那抱走，送至一所遥远的女修道院让修女抚养。
Soon she becomespregnant and births an illegitimate girl .Modiglianiis habitually out drinking andcarousing. Jeanne’s bigoted father takes the baby away from her andhas it conveyed to a remote nunnery to be reared by thenuns.
为赢五千法郎的奖金以给女儿和又已九个月身孕的珍妮维持生计，莫迪利亚尼报名一场绘画比赛，参加此赛事的还有他的朋友柴姆·苏丁(1893-1943)，莫斯·基林(1891-1953)，莫里斯·郁特里罗（1883-1955），迭戈·里韦拉（1886-1957）以及他厌恶的劲敌毕加索（1881-1973）。
Modigliani signs up for an artcompetition with other artists including his friends Chaim Soutine, Moise Kisling, MauriceUtrillo, Diego Rivera, and his loathed antagonistPablo Picasso in order to win the 5000 francs prize money so he canprovide for his daughter and Jeanne who is nine monthspregnant.
在比赛揭晓的那一晚，莫迪利亚尼叫他的经纪人把完成的画作小心搬去赛场，而他自己只身往市政厅办他与珍妮的结婚证。把结婚证总算拿在了手，他没径直到绘画比赛场，却拐去一间小酒吧，他喝得酩酊大醉，吹嘘说他有五千法郎。
On the evening of the contest,he instructs his art dealer to safely deliver his painting to thecompetition while he heads aloneto City Hallandappliesforamarriage license. He eventually obtains the marriage license, butinstead of going directly to the competition,heveersinto a bar , drinkshimselfsillyand crows that he possesses 5000francs.
当他定神想起比赛将于八时开幕，未付账单他就匆匆离去，两名酒吧打手尾随他至无人处，对他兜头盖脸一顿打，又搜他的身却一文钱也未翻到，才扬长而去。
Whenhecomposes himself fora moment,herecollects that the competition will commenceat 8 o’clock. He departs without paying his bill. Two hatchet menwho were employed at the bar trail him to a desertedspotand assault him. They search his clothes butare unable to find even a penny, so they swaggeraway.
莫迪利亚尼被狠命殴打一番躺卧在街头。他虽不在场，绘画比赛冠军仍裁定给他。珍妮回家焦灼等待，不晓得他去了哪里。结果莫迪利亚尼由街头爬回家门口，浑身上下血淋淋，伤得很重。郁特里罗与苏丁来他家找他，望见屋门外的血迹，就闯进屋，见他躺在床上情形危重。
He is left pummeled and lyingprone in the street. In his absence, the first prize is awarded tohim. Jeanne is fretfully waiting at home for him, not knowing hiswhereabouts.Modiglianieventuallycrawlsup to the door from the street, covered in blood and seriouslyhurt. Utrillo and Soutine come seeking him out. They discover bloodoutside his door , break in and see him lying inbed in critical condition.
尽管他们赶不迭把他送入诊所，莫迪利亚尼仍死在了医院，病床旁围着他的几位画家朋友。珍妮返回家，由五层楼的窗户跳下自杀了，腹中尚怀有未出生的九个月大的婴孩。电影结尾，毕加索跟其他艺术家在葬仪结束过后，甚悲痛地自莫迪利亚尼与珍妮的合葬墓地与墓石前，慢慢走过去。
Even though theyhasten him to the hospital, Modigliani tragicallyexpires in the hospital surrounded by his artist friends. Jeannereturns home and kills herself and her unborn 9-month-old baby byleaping out of a five story window. The movie ends with a graveyardscene showing Picasso and the other artists sadly strolling awayfrom their grave site and shared tombstone following thefuneral.
