Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics provides aforum for the publication of papers on all aspects of engineeringrelated to earthquakes. The Editorial policy is to maintain areasonable balance between papers from researchers and from designengineers so that the Journal will be useful to both groups. Theproblems in this field, and their solutions, are international incharacter and require knowledge of several traditional disciplines;the Journal will reflect this.
The main subject of the Journal is earthquake engineering in allits varied aspects, including seismology, tsunamis, ground motioncharacteristics, soil and foundation dynamics, wave propagation,probabilistic and deterministic methods of dynamic analysis,experimental behaviour of structures, and methods for earthquakeresistant design and retrofit of structures that are germane topracticing engineers. It includes seismic code requirements andsystem identification, as well as supplemental energy dissipation,base isolation, and structural control emphasizing earthquakeengineering. Papers on structural dynamics, which are concernedwith other forms of dynamic loading but have relevance toearthquake engineering, will be welcome.

Geomechanics is an interdisciplinary field dealing with themechanical behaviour of, and fluid flow and transport phenomena ingeomaterials (soils, rocks, concrete, ice, snow, powders andceramics), and their role in diverse applications in geological,geotechnical, structural, earthquake, environmental, mining,offshore and petroleum engineering. The journal emphasizescontributions to the understanding of the complex properties ofgeomaterials through experimental measurements, and the developmentor novel use of analytical or numerical techniques to solveproblems in geomechanics. Topics of interest in material behaviorinclude instabilities and localization, interface and surfacephenomena, fracture and failure, coupledchemo-hygro-thermo-mechanical problems, and time-dependentphenomena. Specifically within the scope of the journal fall themodelling and simulation of heterogeneous materials at differentscales, including micromechanics, and any issue that bears upondifficulties encountered in modelling materials where themicrostructure becomes important for macroscopically observedmechanical and physical properties. The scope also covers thesolution of inverse problems including back analysis of in situ orlaboratory tests, and stochastic methods. The journal isparticularly interested in contributions that demonstrate theapplication of theoretical geomechanics in the solution ofengineering problems.
