Teaching aims and demands:

a. Fast-reading for main idea of thereading passage.
b. Get some ideas of how cartoons makepeople laugh or think
c. Describing the characteristics ofTom and Jerry with adjectives.

a. Cultivate the students’ abilities toco-operate with each other in the group work and to express theirown opinions.
b. Discuss how to draw vivid cartoonpictures
Main and difficult points:
1.Ss should be able to memorize the keywords and expressions. And learn to make up some sentences usingthe key phrases.
2.Ss are expected to recite theimportant paragraphs of the reading passage.

Step One: Warmingup
1. Show the students some cartoonpictures and ask them what cartoons they are from. The last twopictures are Tom and Jerry.
2. Get the students to say somethingabout the makers of Tom and Jerry Tales.
3. Get the students to say somethingabout MGM---one of the largest and best film making companies inHollywood.
Step Two:Presentation
1. Show a short video of Tom and Jerryto the class. After watching it, ask the students to come to theblackboard and write down adjectives to describe thecharacteristics of Tom or Jerry. Each student can only write oneword since more students should have the chance.
Step Three: PassageComprehension
1.Students skim the first and lastparagraphs of Tom and Jerry and answer the following twoquestions: 1) The passage is about the history of the Tom and Jerrycartoons.; 2) Are Tom and Jerry good friends? Why or why not?
2.Students listen to para1---3 and tellT or F about the following statements. They should find sentencesin the passage to support their answers.
1) Tom and Jerry cartoons were createdonly a short time ago.
2)Hanna and Barberamade the cat very clever.
3)The first Tom andJerry cartoon was very successful.
4)Most Tom and Jerrycartoons are very long.

Step Five:consolidation
1.Show the short video to the studentsonce again. After watching it, two groups of students will act itout.
2.Divide the students into five groups.They will have a group discussion. The topics are: Which version doyou like best? Why? Would you choose to be Tom or Jerry? Why? Youcan use the sentence patterns: I think the version on the screen isthe best because…; I would like to be Jerry because…
3.Get each group leader to presenttheir opinions.

1.Read the passage after the tape forfive times and get parents’ signature

Postscript:
The students are really eager to showtheir good points before all the teachers who come to the class.They have been well-prepared before the period. They surfed theInternet to watch Tom and Jerry Tales. They got someinformation about their makers and MGM. In fact, most of thestudents began to watch Tom and Jerry Tales when they werevery young and they like them. They are quite familiar with thetopic and they are much interested in it. So they are veryconfident in answering all the questions. They are very active andcooperative in class.
