在阅读中，有时我们会but引导的子句中看到but后接副词
rather、instead或otherwise，其用法如何？下面我们作一
番探讨。
butrather but是表示转折的连接词，其后接副词rather可加强语气。
△常用于not…… but rather ……结构，意思是“不是……，而
是……”、“不是……，只是……”，表示强烈的对比意味。
1）True abundancecomesnotfromamassing,butratherfrom
appreciating
真正的富足不是来自财富的积聚，而是来自对所拥有一切的珍视。
2）Hissuccess liesnotin hisknowledgebut ratherinhis
industriousness.
他之成功并不在于他的学识，而在于他的勤奋。
3）Theyheld themselvesaloof,notin asky,butratherinan
independent way.
她们偏偏不理不睬，并非怕羞，却是自己很有主意的样子。

埃塞俄比亚对外国投资并不是完全敞开大门，而只是有选择地开放。

他否认这笔钱是贿赂，而只是用来在香港购买股票的贷款。（deny含
有否定意味）
△也可用于肯定句强调转折语气。
1）Thisdish is deliciousbutrathera trouble toprepare.
这种菜好吃不好做。
2）He isfairly cleverbutratherlazy.
他很聪明，但也相当懒。
3）He'sverylearnedbutratherabsentminded.
他很有学问，可是好忘事。
4）Thebeach is beautiful,butrathercold at this time ofthe
year.
这个季节，海滩很美，但比较冷。
5）He hasa bluffbutratherpleasant manner.
他举止粗鲁却可爱。
6）Hehad a slouch, his face was red,hisnoselongbut rather
pleasing.
他戴着一顶阔软边呢帽，红红的脸，长长的鼻子长得很可爱。
butinstead 用法与butrather相似，但butinstead侧重表示出
现前面所述相反的情况，或表示与前面所述不同的情况。
1）Thepatient’s condition is expected to beimproving,but
insteadit is gettting evenworse.
期望病人病情况有所好转,与其相反，病情反而更糟。
2）However，theministerd didn't answerthe question,but
instead he blamed him for his rudeness in raisingthe
question.
但是,部长没有回答他，反而指责他问问题的方式粗暴。
3）Theirsubsequent flietaction are not presenteddirectlybut
insteadglossedover by the narration.
作者没有直接描写他们后来的谈话，而是用叙述一笔带过。
4)WhatIhaveorderedwasacheeseburger,butinsteadthe
waitersentmeahotdog.
我点了一个干酪汉堡包,但服务员却拿来了一个热狗。
5）Hedidn'tletthescreen door bang like everyone else did
butinsteadshutitgently.
他不像别人那样让百叶门砰一声弹回来，而是轻轻关上。
6）Mr.Johnson did not speak muchbutinsteadlet hismusic
communicate.
约翰逊先生的话不多，而是用他的音乐来交流。
7）Wehad expected him to be angry, but instead, he satquietly
at his desk, as sober as a judge.
我们以为他会发怒，可他却是一声不响地坐在桌子旁边，非常冷静。
butotherwise otherwise置于but之后，表示“别的方面……”、“除此之外……”的意思。
1）Thepaint on the cottage had peeled in a few places,but
otherwiseit looked wellkept.
农舍的油漆有好几个地方脱落，但除此之外农舍看上保存得很好。
2）Therent is high,butotherwidethe house issatisfactary.
房租是贵了点，不过房子的别他方面还是令人满意的。
3）Thefood and drink ran out early,butotherwisetheparty
was asuccess.
食品和饮料早早就用光了，但除此之外晚会还是很成功的。
4）Hisparents agreed to pay the rent for hisapartment,but
otherwiseleft him to fend forhimself.
他的父母同意替他付房租，其他的则让他自己解决。
5）She has a history of borderline hypertensionand intermittent
atrialfibrillation,butotherwisehasbeen well.
她有临界性高血压和间歇性房颤的病史，但其他方面一直不错。
6）Youmadeoneortwosmallmistakes,butotherwiseyourworkwas good.
你的作业有一两处小错，除此之外其他的很好。
7）Thegirl was cryingand has a gash on herforehead,butotherwise she seemed unhurt.
女孩还在哭喊，额头被擦伤了，除此之外，毫发无损。
△butotherwise通常一起连用，有时也可被隔开。
1）He is alittle obstinate,buthisisotherwisequite
suitableforthe post.
他就是有点固执，从其他方面来看，倒是很适合这个职位。
2）He wascareless,butnototherwisetobe blamed.
他是有点粗心，但其他方面没有什么可指责的。
3）These lists are particulary useful in learningand

这些列表尤其适用于学习和测试，但是在其它情况下也很方便。
