来源于拉丁文 abstinēre【先有hold or keep away的意思，后来又引申withhold】。其动词形式tenēre【原始含义为“伸展”；后又表示“抓住，拿住”】产生了很多英语单词contain, maintain, obtain, retain,tenacious, tenant, tenement, tenet, tenor,tenure。这个单词是通过古法语abstenir传入英语的，直到16世纪才专门的有【refraining from pleasurableactivities, particularly the drinking of alcohol】的意思。其拉丁动词的过去分词词干 abstent-形成abstention；现在分词的词干abstinent-产生abstinent与abstinence。但是与abstemious没有词源关系，这个词来源于另外一个表示喝酒的拉丁词tēmōtum。
thing 古英语中这个词的原始意义为time: 追溯到史前德语*thingam, 与 Gothic theihs【time】有关, 可能来自印欧词根*ten-【stretch】。在德文中经历了从“appointed time”含义到“judicial or legislativeassembly”的意思。而在英语中经历了从“subject for discussion at such anassembly”到“subject in general, affair,matter”最后到“entity, object”的演变。
