The first thing I do when I wake up is to make a mental listof all things I have to do that day. I’m very organized! Then I getup and have my bath. Often my best matchmaking ideas come while I’min the bath. Sometimes I have a really good idea about who might bewith whom.

Before I did matchmaking, I was a social worker, but I knew Iwanted to do something without bosses telling me what to do andthat I am good at dealing with people. Also I had seen too manybroken marriages and too many people go downhill because they wereso lonely. So I gave up my job, did a bit of research and startedthe matchmaking business in 1970.

Over the last few years we’ve been doing introductionsthroughout Europe as well as here in Britain. Europeans want tomeet British people. For every 100 people who come to us, about 65will settle down. We keep going until clients (委托人) find someonethat they get on very well with. Of course there are impossiblepeople, those who will never settle.

Sometimes I end up giving advice to clients. A few months ago,we had a highly paid scientist with a very nice face, but everywoman refused to meet him a second time. It soon became clear thathe did not like changing his shirts. So I had to be very honest anddirect and told him, “But a woman can’t start to love you if yourshirt smells.” The job is most satisfying when I get a call from acouple telling me they have fallen in love.

  A. She was warm and kind-hearted.

  B. She could understand people better than others.

  C. She liked to make her own decisions.

  D. She was interested in social problems.

  59. From the author’s experience given in the last paragraph,we can conclude that to be a good matchmaker, sometimes it isbetter for one to be ____.

  A. direct B. kind C. hard working D.organized

                        B

We have saved as a final set of emotions the two mostimportant emotions (情感) towards other people: love and itsopposite, hate. Love can be seen everywhere. Yet surprisingly, lovehas been the subject of less scientific research than otheremotions, such as anger and fear. The reason for this may betwofold.First, love is a very complex (复杂的) emotion, difficult todescribe and measure. Secondly, unlike many extreme emotions, extreme love is generally not a problem; thus less medicalattention has been paid to it.

What is love? This is a complex question and requires acomplex answer. Love is a lasting, strong, positive attraction andfeeling for another person or thing. But it is more than this. Italso includes feelings of caring, protection and excitement. Whentwo people are in love, they feel drawn to one another; theygreatly enjoy each other’s company; and they may be sexuallyattracted to one another.

Sometimes it is easier to think in terms of different kinds oflove: “puppy” love, romantic love, brotherly love, and so forth.Though they differ in some respects, they share one importantcharacteristic: a strong positive feeling toward another.

Our feelings toward other people are often complex. We maylove someone and, at the same time, be angry with him. Or we maylove someone, even though we envy him. We might even love someoneand, at the same time, hate him for some specific reason. Hate is astrong negative emotion toward someone, and is due to anger, orsome other factor. Like love, hate can be a very strong emotion. Itcan also be very dangerous. The question is often asked, “Is it badto hate?” The best answer is probably “sometimes yes and sometimesno.” Usually hate does not help us; it makes us feel unhappy andmakes us do things that may hurt others. However, sometimes it maybe necessary to hate and hurt someone in order to protect lovedones.

Every pet owner loves his pet. There is no argument here.

But when we asked our readers whether they would clone theirbeloved animals, the responses were split almost down the middle.Of the 228 readers who answered it, 108 would clone, 111 would notand nine weighed each side without offering an opinion.

Clearly, from readers’ response, this is an issue that reachesdeeply into both the joy and eventual sadness of owning a pet. Itspeaks, as well, to people’s widely differing expectations over thedeveloping scientific procedure.

Most of the respondents who favored the idea strongly believedit would produce at least a close copy of the original; many feltthe process would actually return an exact copy. Those on the otherside, however, held little hope a clone could never truly recreatea pet, many simply didn’t wish to go against the natural law oflife and death.

Both sides expressed equal love for their animals. More than afew respondents owned “the best dog/cat in the world”. They thoughtof their pets as their “best friend”, “a member of the family,”“the light of my life.” They told moving stories of pets’ heroism, intelligence and selfless devotion.

Little wonders the loss is so disturbing---and the cloning soattractive. “People become very close to their animals, and theloss can be just as hard to bear as when a friend or family memberdies,” says Gary Kowalski, author of Goodbye, Friend: HealingWisdom for Anyone Who Has Ever Lost a Pet. “For me, cloning feelslike an attempt to turn death away…It’s understandable. Death isalways painful. It’s difficult to deal with. It’s hard toaccept.”

But would cloning reduce the blow? This question seemed to beat the heart of this problem.

64.So far as the cloning of pets is concerned, a recent surveyshows that, of all pet owners, ____.

  A. a lot more of them are for it

  B. a lot more of them are against it

  C. very few of them are willing to tell their opinions

  D. about half of them are for it and the other half againstit

65.While talking about the respondents from the readers, theexpression “eventual sadness of owning a pet” refers to ____.

  A. the death of one’s pet

  B. the high cost of owning a pet

  C. the troubles one has to deal with in keeping a pet

  D. the dangers involved in the cloning of a pet

66.In spite of their differences on the problem of cloning, itseems that ____.

  A. all pet owners love their pets very much

  B. all pet owners try to go against the natural law of lifeand death

  C. people who support cloning love their pets more

  D. people who dislike cloning love their pets more

67.From what Gary Kowalski says, we can know that he ____.

  A. has never thought about the problem of cloning

  B. is going to write another book on pets

  C. is in favor of the idea of cloning pets

  D. is all against the cloning of pets

68.What is the key question at the heart of the problem ofcloning pets?

  A. Can cloning make the pain one suffers less when a petdies?

  B. Can pet owners afford the cost of cloning?

  C. Does cloning go against the law of nature?

  D. How reliably does cloning produce an exact copy of one’spet?

                      D

How can you find out what is going on inside a person’s bodywithout opening the patient up? Regular X-ray can show a lot. CATscans (扫描) can show even more. They can give a three-dimensional(三维的) view of body organs (器官).

What is CAT scan? CAT stands for Computerized Axial Topography(层面X线照相术). It is a special X-ray machine that obtains a 360 degreepicture of a small area of a patient’s body.

Doctors use X-rays to study and diagnose (discover the natureof) diseases and injuries within the body. X-rays can learn theposition of foreign objects inside the body or take pictures ofsome inside organs---if special liquids are added to the organs tobe X-rayed.

A CAT scanner, however, uses a light of X-rays to give across-sectional (横断面的) view of a specific part of the body. A finelight of X-rays is scanned across the body and turned around thepatient from many different positions. A computer collects theinformation from each position and produces a clear cross-sectionalimage on a screen. This image is then photographed for later use.Several cross-sections, taken one after another, can give clear“photo” of the entire body organs. The newest CAT scanners can evengive clear pictures of active, moving organs, just as a fast actioncamera can “stop the action”, giving clear pictures of what appearsunclear to the eye. And because of the 360-degree pictures, CATscans show 3 dimensional views of organs in a manner that was onlymade known during an operation or an examination a deadpatient.

Too much X-ray can cause skin burns, cancer or other damage tothe body. Yet CAT scans actually don’t expose (使暴露) the patient tomore radiation (辐射) than regular X-rays do. CAT scans can also bedone without injecting liquids into the patient so they are lessrisky than regular X-ray procedures.

CAT scans provide accurate, detailed information. They canfind such a thing as bleeding inside the brain. They are helping tosave lives.

  69. What is NOT true of a CAT scan?

  A. It makes use of computer techniques.

  B. It gives clear images of active, moving body parts.

  C. It can stop the action of an organ for some time.

  D. It is safer than regular X-ray procedures.

  70. What is special about the latest CAT scanners?

  A. It helps to find out what is going on inside a person’sbody without opening it up.

  B. It provides clear photos of moving organs.

  C. It won’t cause serious skin burns, cancer or other damageto the body.

  D. It can take 3-dimensional pictures of inside organs.

  71. It is implied but not directly stated in the passage that____.

  A. CAT scanners can take photos of either the whole body orone part of it

  B. CAT scanners do not need the injection of liquids

  C. CAT scanners are more expensive than regular X-rayprocedures

  D. the patient can be exposed to a slight amount of radiationsafely

  72. The best title for the passage might be ____.

  A. The New Medical Invention

  B. Advantages and Disadvantages of CAT Scanners

  C. How to Avoid Damage to X-rays

  D. A New Type X-ray Machine to Save Lives

We have had a heated discussion on whether our school shouldrent part of our playground to a chemical plant.

如:China is full ofhistory。

  22. C. take on在此处意为“从事”。

  26. D. more than意为“多于,超过”;less than意为“少于”;otherthan意为“除了”;rather than意为“而不是”。

until后面省略了it(the lesson) is,课是被人学,所以用learned。

either one will do,either one will be fine, either one will beOK在本句中都可以,意为“任何一个都可以”。

  31. A. whoever=anyone who

E-mail didn’t becomea popular means of communication until recent years.

The 1980’s saw the trade between the twocountries reach its highest point.

He is known as a writer。

  39. D. religious values

如果用knowledge,应为theycan teach their children more knowledge。

  42. D. average

open a discussion可以,但是open reading不合适。

  49. B. form a desert形成沙漠。如果选appear应为how deserts appear。

  50. A. affect影响。

  53. A. be fit to do意为“胜任”,符合题意。

  54. B. desire=strongwish,渴望或欲望。hope=expectation期待。

“make a mental list of…”

  58. C.从文章第二段第一句“without bosses telling me what todo…”

  59. A.从本段“I had to be very honest and direct…”可知。

  60. C.从第一句话“a final set of emotions”,可知。

  61. D.从第一段“love is a very complex emotion…describe…isgenerally not a problem”可知。

从最后一段“we may love someone, even though weenvy him”和“we might even love someone…hate him…”

  66. A.从第五段“Both sides expressed equal love for theiranimals”可知。

  69. C.从该仪器的全称“Computerized AxialTopography”,就可以断定A的叙述是真实的;根据第四段中的 “The newest CAT scanners can evengive clear images of active, moving organs…”

  70. B.从第四段“The newest CAT scanners can even give clearpictures of active, movingorgans”可知A、C和D都是CAT的特点,但只有最新的CAT才具备B中的特殊性能,所以选B。

  71. D.从第二段“a small area of a patient’s body” 和第四段“a CATscanner, however, uses a light of X-rays to give a cross-sectionalview of a specific part of the body” 可知, A是错的。第五段指出“CAT scans canalso be done without injecting liquids into the patient, so theyare less risky than regular X-ray procedures”因此排除B。 倒数第二段指出“Yet CAT scans actually don’t expose thepatient to more radiation than regular X-rays do”可见D是对的。

  73. D.从“guide”中“must be willing to work longhours”,可知A不对。

  75. B. her voice不适合做guide, knows little aboutmanagement不适合做office assistant, likes to work withpeople不适合做assistant,所以选AD.2, tennis instructor。

  76. consider→considers everyone

  77. excited→exciting experience

  78. many→more 后文中有than,所以应用比较级。

  79. √

  80. the school→school hurry to school和go toschool一样,school指的是上学。

  82. stop→stop at 在公共汽车站停,缺介词at。

  83. that→which 非限制性定语从句用which不用that。

  85. often→seldom
