"Wish You WereHere"
isthe title track on Pink Floyd's 1975 album
Wish You Were Here.
Thesong's lyrics encompass writer Roger Waters'
feelings of alienation from other people.
Like most of the album, it refers to
former Pink Floyd member Syd Barrett and hisbreakdown.
Themain riff came to David Gilmour at home,
while playing on an acoustic guitar,
andit became something which he continued to
play in-between takes at Abbey RoadStudios
where it caught the attention of RogerWaters.
They collaborated to complete the song,
asWaters had already written some lyrics.
In 2004, the song wasranked #316 on Rolling Stone's list
of the 500 GreatestSongs of All Time.
Inthe original album version, the song segues from "Have aCigar"
asif a radio had been tuned away from onestation,
through several others (including a radio play andone
playing Tchaikovsky'sFourth Symphony),
andfinally to a new station where "Wish You Were Here" isbeginning.
Theradio was recorded from Gilmour's car radio.
Gilmour performed the intro on a twelve-stringguitar,
processed to sound like it was playing through an oldtransistor radio,
andthen overdubbed a fuller-sounding acoustic guitarsolo.
This passage was mixedto sound as though
theguitarist was sitting in a room,
playing along with the radio;
italso contains a whine that slowly changespitch—
emulating the heterodyne between two drifting AM radiosignals.
Theintro riff is repeated several times andreprised
when Gilmour playsfurther solos with scat singingaccompaniment.
At the end of therecorded song,
thefinal solo crossfades with wind sound effects
(reminiscent of "One of These Days" from the 1971 albumMeddle),
andfinally segues into the second section of the multi-partsuite
"Shine On You CrazyDiamond".
Thesong borrows the imagery of a "steel rail"
from Syd Barrett's solo song,
"If It's In You," fromThe Madcap Laughs album.
Itis said that the sound of David Gilmour
coughing on the intro to the track made him stopsmoking.
Wish You Were Here is the ninth studio albumby
English progressive rock group PinkFloyd,
released in September 1975. Inspired by material theycomposed
while performing across Europe,
itwas recorded over numerous sessions at London's Abbey RoadStudios.
Thealbum explores themes of absence, the musicbusiness,
andformer band-mate Syd Barrett's mentaldecline.
Early sessions were a difficult and arduousprocess
but it was RogerWaters' idea to split the centrepiecetrack
"Shine On You CrazyDiamond" in two,
andjoin each half with three new compositions.
"Shine On" was a tribute to Barrett, who, in an ironictwist,
made an impromptu visit to the studio while it was beingrecorded.
Theband failed initially to recognise Barrett,
whohad gained weight and changed in appearance.
Asin their previous work,
TheDark Side of the Moon, the band made use of studioeffects
andsynthesizers. Roy Harper was a guest vocalist on "Have aCigar".
Thealbum packaging, again designed by StormThorgerson,
featured an opaque black sleeve inside which was hidden thealbum artwork.
Wish You Were Here premièred at Knebworth in July1975,
andwas released in September that year.
Itwas an instant success;
record company EMI was unable to print enoughcopies
to satisfy thedemand.
Initially receiving mixed reviews,
thealbum has since been voted to the 209th place
onRolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of AllTime.
Band members Richard Wright and David Gilmour have eachdeclared
Wish You Were Here their favourite Pink Floydalbum.
Lyrics:
So,so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Canyou tell a green field from a cold steelrail?
Asmile from a veil?
Doyou think you can tell?
Anddid they get you to trade your heroes forghosts?
Hotashes for trees?
Hotair for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Anddid you exchange a walk on part
inthe war for a lead role in a cage?
HowI wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl,
year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
Thesame old fears.
Wish you were here.
