The phone rang again.

“Morrie,can you talk?”Connie asked

“I’m visiting with my old friend now,”he announced.“Let them call back.”

I cannot tell you why he received me so warmly.I was hardly the promising student who had left him sixteen years earlier.Had it not been for“Nightline,”Morrie might have died without ever seeing me again.

happened to me? I once promised myself I would never work for money, that I would join the

Peace Corps, and that 1 would live in beautiful, inspirational places.

Instead, I had been in Detroit for ten years,at the same workplace, using the same bank, visiting the same barber I was thirty-seven,more mature than in college, tied to computers and modems and cell phones.I was no longer young, nor did I walk around in gray sweatshirts with

unlit cigarettes in my mouth.I did not have long discussions over egg salad sandwiches about the meaning of life.

My days were full,yet I remained,much of the time,unsatisfied [来

Would you eat a ready meal from the fridge rather than cook by yourself? Have you been doing Internet shopping rather than going to the stores? What can't you be bothered to do?

A study into how lazy British people are has found more than half of the adults are so idle (懒散的) that they'd catch the lift rather than climb two flights of stairs.

Just over 2000 people were quizzed by independent researchers at Nuffield Health, Britain's largest health center. The results were extremely surprising.

About one in six people questioned said if their remote control was broken, they would continue watching the same channel rather than get up.

More than one third of those questioned said they would not run to catch a bus. Worryingly, of the 654 respondents with children, 64% said they were often too tired to play with them.

This led the report to conclude that it's no wonder that one in six children in the UK are classified as obese (very fat) before they start school.

Dr Sarah Dauncey, medical director of Nuffield Health, said, “People need to get fitter, not just for their own sake, but for the sake of their families, friends and evidently their pets too.”

“If we don't start to take control of this problem, a whole generation will become too unfit to perform even the most fundamental tasks.”

And Scotland's largest city, Glasgow, was shamed as the most idle city in the UK, with 75% questioned admitting they do not get enough exercise, followed closely by Birmingham and Southampton, both with 67%.

The results bring serious challenges for the National Health Service, where obesity-related illnesses such as heart disease and cancer have been on a steady increase for the past 40 years and are costing billions of pounds every year.

60.How many people questioned don't play with their children?

A.1280. B.More than 333.

B.Glasgow people feel ashamed because they don't get enough exercise

D.five sixt hs of the British children are healthy

62.How does the author convince the readers?

A.By presenting the results of a study. B.By providing answers to questions.

C.By interviewing some experts. D.By telling a story.

63.What is the passage mainly about?

The rising costs of health care have become a problem for many countries in the world. To deal with this problem, it is recommended that a big part of the government's health budget be used for health education and disease prevention instead of treatment. Actually, many kinds of diseases are preventable in many ways and preventing a disease is usually much cheaper than treating it. For example, people could avoid catching a cold if they dressed warmly when the weather starts getting cold. But many people get sick because they fail to do so, and have to spend money seeing a doctor.

Daily habits like eating more healthy food would have kept millions of families from becoming bankrupt if the patients had taken measures for early prevention. For instance, keeping a balanced diet, such as not consuming too much animal fat and insuring a steady intake of vegetables and fruits, seems to be quite important.

One very effective and costless way of prevention is regular exercise, which is necessary for a healthy mind and body. Regular exercise, such as running, walking, and playing sports is a good way to make people feel better or reduce stress.

In addition, health education plays a key role in improving people's health. By giving people more information about health, countries could help people understand the importance of disease prevention and ways to achieve it. For example, knowing one's family medical history is an effective way to help keep healthy. Information about health problems among close relatives will make them aware of what they should do to prevent certain diseases through lifestyle changes, which will work before it is too late.

However, stressing disease prevention does not mean medical treatment is unimportant. After all, prevention and treatment are just two different means toward the same effect. In conclusion, we could save money on health care and treat patients more successfully if our country spends more money on health prevention and education.

67.What’s the best title of the passage?

A.Prevention or Education?

B.Prevention or Treatment?

C.Health or Illness?

D.Exercise or Illness?

D.More successful than ever before

A.dressing warmly can prevent diseases

B.a balanced diet is cheaper than regular exercise

C.the more health education, the better

D.the government’s health budget should be increased

70.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take the fact of friendship for granted, we often don’t clearly understand how we make friends. While we get on well with a number of people, 71 .

Moreover, a great many relationships come under the general term “friendship”.In all cases, two people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of closeness between them and the reasons for their interest in each other change greatly.

At the beginning, much depends on how people meet, and on good first impressions. As we

get to know people, 72 . Although these factors are not of the greatest importance,it is more

difficult to have a good relationship with people when there is a big difference in age and background.

Then, 73 .Friends will stand closer together and will spend more time looking at each other than ordinary friends.Smiles and soft voices also express friendliness, and it is because they may give the wrong signals that shy people often have difficulty making friends. A friendly look with a wrong facial expression can turn into an unfriendly stare, and nervousness may be wrongly understood as unfriendliness.

Some relationships are a result of argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have the same ideas and beliefs, the same opinion and interests. The more closely involved people become.the more they depend on each other. And 74 . Equally, friends have to learn to make allowances for each other, to put up with annoying habits, and to accept differences in opinion.

In contrast with marriage, 75 . But the support and understanding that results fro m shared experiences and affections does seem to create a close and lasting relationship

As is shown in the picture, a half-empty bottle is going to stick a label of “full” on its body, feeling proud and confident.

The picture seems to be reflecting a kind of social phenomenon. We might often meet some people who look confident, trying to impress others with their “rich” knowledge. However, just like the bottle in the picture, what they really know is just a little. What they actually have in their head is far from enough. As an old saying goes, empty bottles make the loudest noise.

Therefore, it’s wise to enrich ourselves with knowledge and try to make our head full.

M: Hello?

W: Hello. Is that Mr. Jackson?

M: Yes, it is.

W: Mr. Jackson. I am a reporter from the TV station at our school. As far as I know, you are a very successful teacher, and quite popular among the students, so I want to ask you some questions about your teaching and you students.

M: OK.

W: First question, do you often give homework to your students after class?

M: It depends. Maybe once or twice a week.

W: Do you think it is good for your students to do a lot a homework?

M: No, I don’t think so. Too much homework takes too much of their free time. I seldom give homework to my students on the weekend.

W: Do you agree the students need a lot of exercise in their spare time?

M: Well, yes … but they also need time to relax and have a rest, especially on weekends.

W: You are a great teacher. By the way, what do you do in your free time?

M: I’m a very good football player. My team won the first place in our city last year.

W: Congratulations! Well, thank you for your help.

M: Hi, Amy.

W: Hi.

M: You look great! Have you been on vacation?

W: Yeah, I have. I was on the West Coast.

M: Nice! How was it?

W: Great. I had a wonderful time. It was really nice to get away from work.

M: Where did you go?

W: Los Angeles and San Francisco.

M: How did you like Los Angeles?

W: Well, it is cleaner than I thought it would be, and there are a lot of trees, so I like it better than I thought I would. But it’s huge! It’s really hard to get around. The bus service is terrible, and you know, I don’t like taking the underground. We had to rent a car.

M: And was the weather good?

W: Oh, yes , it was nice and warm is Los Angeles.

M: What about San Francisco?

W: The weather? It was cooler than LA, but it wasn’t uncomfortable.

M: Cool in San Francisco? That’s surprising.

W: Yeah, it surprised me a bit, too. And it was a problem because we didn’t take any sweaters or anything like that, but it’s always like that in August. Anyway, I loved it. It’s probably the most beautiful city in the US—all those hills, the bay, and those magical old Victorian houses.

M: So, you like it better than Los Angeles?

W: Absolutely! And there’s much more that you can see and do on foot! It’s smaller than Los Angeles, so it’s much easier to get around. There are lots of buses and streetcars, and of course, minibuses, too.

W: I understand you want to get a job here at the hotel. Now, tell me a little about yourself. Your name is Carter Bragg, right?

M: Yes, it is.

W: Your telephone number?

M: 8956061

W: All right. First, I want to know what languages you can speak.

M: I can speak English, and of course Spanish, and a little French.

W: Can you work at the front desk? Use a computer? Send fax or e-mails?

M: Sure, I can use a computer. I can do all of that.

W: Okay. Let’s see. There are a lot of other jobs here at the hotel, so I need to find out what else you can do. Can you swim? We have a swimming-pool here.

M: Yes, I can swim.

W: We have four restaurants. And one cafe. Can you wait tables?

M: Yeah, I worked as waiter at a restaurant last year.

W: How about weekends? That’s our busiest time. Can you work on weekends?

M: Uh, I can work every day, but not Sunday.

W: Hmm. I see. Now the most important question is: Do you like working with people? At a hotel, you work with people all day.

M: Yeah, I can work with all kinds of people. I come from a big family.

W: As for the payment, if you work 4 days a week, you can earn about $280.

M: That’s OK, I think.

W: Well, Mr. Bragg. Thank you for coming in today. I’ll give you a call in a few days.
