大家经常误以为“on the one hand”和“on the otherhand”之间有递进或者并列的关系。事实上,这一对短语一般是用于提出两个相反的事物和看法(introduce twocontrasting points, facts, or ways of looking at something)。
我们对比下面两个例子:
正确的使用:
On the one hand, if the body doesn't have enoughcholesterol, we would not be able to survive. On the other hand, ifthe body has too much cholesterol, the excess begins to harden thearteries.
大意:从一方面讲,如果身体没有足够的胆固醇,我们不可能生存。从另外一方面讲,如果身体的胆固醇过高,血管可能硬化。
错误的使用:
On the one hand, fast food is not as nutritious asthe food cooked in traditional ways. On the other, fast food mighthave a profound impact on the bond between people.
大意:一方面来说,快餐可能不如传统烹饪的食物有营养,另外一方面说,快餐可能对人和人之间的联系有着很深的影响。
错误的原因:两个句子都在说快餐的坏处,所以不应该用On the otherhand。我们可以用besides, furthermore, what’s more, moreover, inaddition这样的词来代表“再者”,“此外”等意思。
