The film is based on thelegendary Greek mythology hero Heracles(known in thefilm by his Romanname,Hercules),the son of Zeus, in Greekmythology.

ThoughHercules did not match the financial success ofDisney's early-1990sreleases, the film received positive reviews,and made $99 million in revenue in the UnitedStates during its theatrical release and $252,712,101worldwide.

Hercules was later followed by thedirect-to-video prequelHercules:Zero to Hero, which served as a midqueltoHercules:The Animated Series, a syndicated Disney TV series focusingon Hercules during his time at the Prometheus academy.
