INTRODUCTION
THEMANUSCRIPT OF Dubliners was sent to the English publisher GrantRichards in late 1905 as a collection of twelve short stories(subsequently fifteen). After initial enthusiasm for thebook, Richards became uneasy about sexualexplicitness and possible legal complications which couldfollow from this. In 1909 Joyce gave up trying to persuadeGrant Richards to publish the book, and sent it to the Irishpublisher, Maunsel & Company. There the book got asfar as being printed, but the stock was destroyed before itsrelease, this time for fear of possible libel action.Dubliners finally appeared under Grant Richards's imprintin 1914. Thus a work, begun when the author was 22 and arecent graduate of University College, Dublin, and finished in 1907with `The Dead' when he was 25, did not appear in print until hewas 32.
Bythe time Dubliners was published Joyce's great work APortrait of the Artist as a Young Man was being serialised in TheEgoist. The delayed publication of Dubliners thuscontributed to its modest critical reception, and this was furtherunderlined by the greater weight placed on lengthy prose fiction ascompared to short stories at that time. Dubliners, like most ofJoyce's writings, contains autobiographical material—mostly in 'AMother' and 'An Encounter' —while 'Ivy Day in the Committee Room'is based on Joyce's first—hand experience of Irish politics in theearly years of the twentieth century.
Joyce's brother,Stanislaus, has written of the author's keen collection of detailfrom his everyday life for his fiction. Stanislaus himself servesas a model for Mr. Duffy in `A Painful Case'. Joyce's greatauntsare used as models for the Misses Morkan in 'The Dead'. He alsodraws on the early life in Galway of his own Nora Barnacle, toimpart reality into his deeply emotional writing. The portraitwhich Joyce draws in Dubliners is of the intimately observed lifeof a city and its people at a time of radical change. Dubliners isessential reading not only for those seeking an understanding oflife in the Irish capital at the start of the twentieth century,but for all who seek an insight into Joyce the artist and hiswork.

THIS NOVEL was written in its first form in the Tyrol, in1913. It was altogether re-written and finished in Cornwall in1917. So that it is a novel which took its final shape in the midstof the period of war, though it does not concern the war itself. Ishould wish the time to remain unfixed, so that the bitterness ofthe war may be taken for granted in the characters.
The book has been offered to various London publishers.Their almost inevitable reply has been :“We should like very muchto publish, but feel we cannot risk a prosecution.” They rememberthe fate of The Rainbow, and are cautious. This book is a potentialsequel to The Rainbow.
In England, I would never try to justify myself against anyaccusation. But to the Americans, perhaps I may speak for myself. Iam accused, in England, of uncleanness and pornography. I deny thecharge, and take no further notice.
In America the chief accusation seems to be one of“Eroticism.” This is odd, rather puzzling to my mind. Which Eros?Eros of the jaunty “amours,” or Eros of the sacred my steries? Andif the latter, why accuse, why not respect, evenvenerate?
Let us hesitate no longer to announce that the sensualpassions and mysteries are equally sacred with the spiritualmysteries and passions. Who would deny it any more? The only thingunbearable is the degradation, the prostitution of the livingmysteries in us. Let man only approach his own self with a deeprespect, even reverence for all that the creative soul, theGod-mystery within us, puts forth. Then we shall all be sound andfree. Lewdness is hateful because it impairs our integrity and ourproud being.
The creative, spontaneous soul sends forth its promptingsof desire and aspiration in us. These promptings are our true fate,which is our business to fulfil. A fate dictated form outside, fromtheory or from circumstance, is a false fate.

This novel pretends only to be a record of the writer's owndesires, aspirations, struggles; in a word, a record of theprofoundest experiences in the self. Nothing that comes from thedeep, pasional soul is bad, or can be bad. So there is no apologyto tender, unless to the soul itself, if it should have beenbelied.
Man struggles with his unborn needs and fulfilment. Newunfoldings struggle up in torment in him, as buds struggle forthfrom the midst of a plant. Any man of real individuality tries toknow and to understand what is happening, even in himself, as hegoes along. This struggle for verbal consciousness should not beleft out in art. In is a very great part of life. It is notsuperimposition of a theory. It is the passionate struggle intoconscious being.
We are now in a period of crisis. Every man who is acutelyalive is acutely wrestling with his own soul. The people that canbring forth the new passion, the new idea, this people will endure.Those others, that fix themselves in the old idea, will perish withthe mew life strangled unborn within them. Men must speak out toone another.
In point of style, fault is often found with the continual,slightly modified repetition. the only answer is that it is naturalto the author; and that every natural crisis in emotion or passionor understanding comes from this pulsing, frictional to-and-frowhich works up to culmination.

导读: 前 言 人文科学和自然科学犹如人类文明的双翼,相辅而行,缺一不可。在经济转轨、社会变革的重大时刻,两者更应相互倚重,才能相得益彰。理、工、农、医等自然科学和技术,理应大力发展,此乃基础。人文社会科学也应同步前进(甚至先行一步),这是导向,关系到能否建成一个富强、民主、开放、文明的国家,关系到能否保持和发扬一个民族的凝聚力、创造力和生命力。然而,由于众所周知的原因,我国文科长期以来一直处于孱弱、滞后的状态。改革开放以后,文科是取得一些长足的发展,而且与发达国家的发展大势相同,文理之间和文科之间和文科内部也开始了交叉、渗透、融合、贯通。但这些进步是远远不够的。正是基于这样的认识,我们早在1990年就聚首一堂,酝酿策划了这部《综合英汉文科大词典》,目的是为了促进文科的复兴,加快文科走向世界、走向日新月异的21世纪。 编写伊始,我们就为自己制定了四个努力目标:一是要涵盖全面,二是要体例实用,三是要注释准确,四是要使用便捷。 为了涵盖全面,我们利用出国讲学的机会,多次通过全球图书馆电脑联网目录(OCLC)“清仓查库”,然后摘、借、买、印,“竭泽而渔”。回国以后,再借助电脑,精筛细选,择善而从。整部词典以8万多文科常见词为中心,纵横辐射,收录了各种专业词组、常见搭配和固定说法近16万条。其涵盖范围不仅有人文科学和社会科学,有“传统”的边缘学科,如军事、体育、建筑和工艺等,而且还有许多文理交叉的新兴学科,如管理科学、信息科学和环境科学。在选收文科词语中,我们不仅着眼于时下“热门”的学科,如经贸和法律,而且注重一些昔日备受“冷落”的领域,如心理和宗教。此外,我们还从英美的书报期刊上锐意穷搜了4000多条90年代流行的新词、新义(包括因特网上的常用词语),如carjacking(劫车)、PC Movement(端正政治态度运动)、videoconferencing(电视会议)、pro-lifer(反对堕胎者)、euro(欧元)、movethegoalposts(移动球门柱;修改章程以卡人利已)、downsize(缩小规模;裁员)、the “me”generation(为我的一代)、websurfing(网上冲浪,网上浏览)、Internaut(因特网用户)、courseware(课程软件)和brain gain(人才流入,人才引进)等。截止发稿前夕,凡能收到的新词,我们都一一列入了大词典。 为了体例实用,我们一反有些专业词典的编法,不是一味地罗列词表、求大求全,而是从读者的实际需要出发,吸收了语文词典的许多特点,力争编成一部多功能的工具书。例如,给本书的单词都注上发音并标出词性。释义不仅有学科义也有常用义。搭配是词汇学习中一个极为重要的环节,也往往是读者的困难所在,所以我们在每个中心词项下,不仅列有大量的后置搭配,还列有相当丰富的前置搭配。常用词项下还附有较全的语文词条。为了便于理解、便于学科之间的相互借鉴,绝大多数词语都探本求源加上了学科标签。另外,不少单词还有语种、语体和语法方面的说明。凡此种种,目的都是为了能满足各方面、多层次的需求。读者不管是求解、鉴赏抑或翻译、写作,案首备有此书,当可大大减轻遍查各种词典之苦。 准确是词典的生命。为了注释准确,我们始终坚持“大胆怀疑、细心查证”的原则,对每个单词、每个搭配都尽量对照例句或上下文多方比较,再三斟酌,力求定义确切、规范、易懂。因此,不少以讹传讹、陈陈相因的“传统”谬误都得到了更正。如agriculturalindustry 和 farmingindustry,很多经济类词典都误注为“农业工业”、“农作物企业”或“农业企业”,本书纠正为“农业”。至于学科标注,因为很多词语是空无依傍,我们一直是诚惶诚恐,有时为了一词一语的学科归属就多方求教,反复核对,力求专家和读者们都能接受。 为了使用便捷,一目了然,本书除词类外一概不用缩略语。语种标签、语体标签和学科标签等,统统使用全称。单词的前后搭配汇集一项。常用的专业说法和意在言外的疑难词组,全都设有互查项。此外,为了能向读者迅速、准确地提供一些常用信息,我们还借助因特网编制了54种英汉附录。发稿前夕,又上网进行了一次复查更新,力争做到资料最新、信息最准。 《综合英汉文科大词典》从策划到杀青,经历了整整八个春秋,其中的几多困难,现已不愿提及了。总之,我们绝大多数编委,在完成繁重的教学任务之后,起早贪黑,不避寒暑,兢兢业业,团结协作,不厌其烦,八易其稿,为的是无愧于自己的学术良知、无愧于万千的读者大众。 本书的整个编写过程中,得到了许多专家、教授的帮助。 美国俄亥俄州伍士德学院(The College of Wooster) 的 Gordon Shull 教授和已故的ErnestCampbell 先生曾大力协助收集资料。 霍义明和侯焕鏐教授在词典起始阶段,曾积极参与过策划和组织工作。 洪银兴、童星、张柏然、赵曙明、宋林飞、严强和归兆恒诸位知名的文科教授与徐式谷、朱原、杨枕旦和李华驹等高级编审,都曾对本书的体例和样稿发表过很有价值的意见。 崔建华、萧耐园、贺艳玲、王奕红和王耀庭教授曾对本书中的外来词注音给予了大力帮助。 杨治中教授对本书自始自终都十分关心,并在许多方面及时地给予了支持。 另外,黄鹤新和纪晓云同志在电脑输入和处理方面,承担了大部分工作。 对上述教授、专家和同志们的支持和帮助,我们在此谨表诚挚的谢意。 但是,我们才疏学浅,汲深绠短,纰谬挂漏,所在必多,除应由我们自己负责外,尚祈专家、读者们不吝指正。 刘纯豹 1997年8月于南京大学 |
