15. What is theMegaplier?

Some states use a Megaplierfeature in which players can increase non-jackpot prize winnings by2, 3, or 4 times. In a participating state, you can play theMegaplier for an extra $1. The Megaplier number is chosen from afield of 21 numbers. Any non-jackpot prize won on a Mega Millionsplay will be multiplied by the Megaplier number drawn if you havepurchased the Megaplier feature. For example, if you win $250,000on Mega Millions and the Megaplier number drawn is 4, you would win$1,000,000 ($250,000 x 4) if you purchased the Megaplier feature. To find out if your state participates, and to find what outMegaplier results, visit the lottery web site in the state in whichyou bought the ticket.

16. Why do Mega Millions andPowerball show different Cash Option amounts for similar-sizedjackpots?

A fixed percentage of everyMega Millions and Powerball ticket sold goes into its CASH jackpot. The cash jackpot is all the money that the lottery has on hand fromthe sale of tickets in the game. If a player chooses the cashoption, then the lottery will pay entire cash amount to the winner(less income tax withholding amounts required by federal and statelaws).

The lottery also offers anANNUITY jackpot option that can help reduce taxes and offers thewinner a 100% guaranteed income stream over time. The two gamesoffer different types of annual income streams, giving the playersmore options. If a winner elects the annuity option, then thelottery will invest the entire cash amount before taxes arededucted. The difference between the CASH jackpot and the ANNUITYjackpot is the interest earnings that build over time. ThePowerball annuity jackpot earns more interest for tworeasons.

ThePowerball Annuity Jackpot invests more money for a longer period oftime.

ThePowerball annuity is paid out in graduated amounts (rising by 4%per year to keep up withinflation) over 29 years (30 payments). The smallest paymentis the first payment and thelargest payment is the last payment. The MegaMillions annuity is paid outover 25 years (26 payments) and each payment isthe same amount. In both cases, the first payment is an immediate cashpayment.

ThePowerball Annuity Jackpot is invested in a wider variety ofsecurities than the MegaMillions Jackpot, allowing more interest to be earned. All ofthe securities used to supportboth games' jackpots offer some level of U.S.Government backing. It isimportant to note that the lottery is invested inthese securities, not thewinner. The winner has a contract with the states topay the annual prize payment,no matter what happens to the securities.

Since the two games' jackpotsare invested differently, if the CASH jackpots are the same, thePowerball jackpot will pay a larger ANNUITY over time than MegaMillions. If the ANNUITY value of the jackpots are the same, thenMega Millions' CASH jackpot will be larger than Powerball's CASHjackpot.

The CASH jackpot amountspresent the true present-day values of the prizes. A winner whowishes to take the CASH jackpot should compare only the CASHjackpot amounts. The ANNUITY jackpot amounts will be important forthose winners who plan to select a long-term, fully guaranteedincome stream.

Mega Millions is now, handsdown, the biggest jackpot game in the country! With millions ofpeople playing (more than any other multi-state, mega-jackpot gamein the U.S.), jackpots can roll to even higher levels at a fasterrate. Jackpots start at $12 million. You choose six numbers andthere are nine exciting ways to win in the game.
