This song is inspired by a friend, who watched as a longtimelove married someone else. I wrote that song about the moment in awedding where you speak now or forever hold your peace. I remembersaying to her, are you going to speak now? I started to think aboutit on the way home: what it would be like to be in love and knowthey’re marrying someone else. That night I had a dream about oneof my ex-boyfriends getting married. The next morning I wrote thesong.

Also already released on iTunes, the title track is thefrothiest song on the album, at least sonically, with Swift tryingout an uncharacteristic vocal style that's closer to Feist than herusual, more conversational approach toward singing.

"When titling an album," she explained last month, "for me thefirst step is I go down the titles of the songs I have so far, andsee any of those titles could be the recurring theme throughout theentire record. At this point I had probably 70% of the songs thatended up being on the album. And I just kept going back to ‘SpeakNow,' because I think it's such a metaphor, that moment where it'salmost too late, and you've got to either say what it is you arefeeling or deal with the consequences forever.
