guess、reckon、speculate

这三个动词都可表示“猜测”、“猜想”。
guess 普通用词，可以用作动词或名词。指毫无根据仅凭个人主观臆断对事物进
行无把握的猜测、猜想。可接名词、wh-clause 和 that-clause作宾语。
1）I can’tguess his thoughts on the matter.
我猜不出在这个问题上他是怎么想的。
2）Canyou guess the meaning of the word from the context?
你能从上下文猜出那词的意思吗?
3）The negotiation between the three sides is still inprogress, but no onecan
guess what the outcome will be.
这三个方面的谈判仍在进行中，没有一个人能猜测结果会怎么样。
4）I could notguess what his inner thought might be.
我真猜不出他的内心想法。
5）I guessthat the manager will not accept the terms they setforth.
我猜那个经理不会接受他们提出的条款。
6）Iguess that you know what's best for the family and forme.
我猜想你一定知道怎样做对整个家庭和我是最有利的。
7）He works always byrule and line, never by chance or guess.
他一向办事精细，从不靠运气或凭猜测。
8）Myguess is that he didn't come because his parents wouldn'tlet him come.
我猜，他没来是因为父母不让他来。
reckon 表示猜测接that-clause，不接 wh-clause, 语气比guess强，即猜
测、猜想的把握性要大一些，也可表示“估计”、“预计”。
1）I reckonthat you will soon recover from your illness and leave thehospital.
我认为你会很快恢复出院的。
2）I reckon that they will stand up for theproposal we put forward.
我猜想他们会支持我们提出的建议。
3）I reckonthat she'll be back by the end of this month.
我估摸着她月底就能回来。
4）Howmuch do you reckon that we can earn this time?
你猜想这次我们攅多少?
5）Expertsreckon that the market may remain depressed until at leastthe end of
next year.
专家估计市场不景气可能将持续到至少明年年底。
6）The doctorsspeculate that he died of a cerebral haemorrhage caused by ablow
on the head.
医生推测他死于头部受击引起的脑溢血。
speculate多指在证据不足、不肯定的情况下所作的“推测”、“设想”，常用
作不及物动词，需接介词about 或on表示“猜测”、“猜想”。
1）No one canspeculate about what will happen next.
No one can speculate about what will happen next.
没有人能猜出下一步会发生什么情况。
2）It is useless tospeculate about such a matter. What we need isexact
knolwedge.
对这样的事作猜测是没有用的，我们需要的是确切的了解。
3）It is nature forme to speculate on his motives for the visit for we havenot
been on speaking terms for many years.
我们多年没有说过话了，很自然我会猜测他来访的动机。
4）I wouldn't like tospeculate on the reasons for her resignation.
我不愿意猜测她辞职的原因。
●有时也开接that-clause。
1）The newspapers have speculated that they willget married next year.
报纸有推测他们将明年结婚。
2）Theyspeculate that a woman's highly attuned smell radar mighthelp her select
a mate.
研究人员由此猜测，女性敏锐的嗅觉可能有助于她们选择适合自己的伴侣。
