齐白石(1864一1957)，男，汉族，湖南湘潭人，二十世纪十大画家之一，世界文化名人。是我国20世纪著名的书画大师和书法篆刻巨匠。其曾任北京国立艺专教授、中央美术学院名誉教授、北京画院名誉院长、中国美术家协会主席等职。曾被授予“中国人民艺术家”的称号、荣获世界和平理事会1955年度国际和平金奖。代表作品有《花卉草虫十二开册页》，《白石草衣金石刻画》等。2011年5月22日，他的最大尺幅作品《松柏高立图·篆书四言联》被拍出4.255亿元人民币的天价。
齐白石出身贫寒，做过农活，曾居住于湖南省涟源市杨市镇。1877年，跟随叔祖父学过木匠，次年改学雕花木工。1888年起始学画，从民间画工入手，曾习古人真迹，摹《芥子园画传》并据以作雕花新样。他学诗文书法，游山川名胜，作幕僚寓客，终于成了诗、书、印、画全人神品的千古伟人；他将中国画的精神与时代的精神统一得完美无瑕，使中国画得到国际的重视；他朴实谦虚、自信自强的精神，使他的作品刚柔兼济，工书俱佳，不愧为人民的艺术家，曾任龙山诗社社长。晚年定居北京。时与陈师曾、徐悲鸿、罗瘿公、林风眠等相过从。
在他的笔下，大凡花鸟虫鱼、山水、人物无一不精，无一不新，为现代中国绘画史创造了一个质朴清新的艺术世界。他成功地以经典的笔墨意趣传达了中国画的现代艺术精神，深深得益于经典样式而又善于出新，故而他的画能够直接地感动人心，向天下众生传达生命的智慧和生活的哲理。他的山水画表达他对自己艺术创新的自信与深刻体悟，他的人物画长于传神达情，他的书法简约大方、雄健浑厚的笔意融入人物画中，完善了人物内在的神情的表达。
1926年，齐白石任国立北平艺术专科学校名誉教授；1949年7月、1953年9月两次出席中华全国文学艺术工作者代表大会，连续当选为全国文联委员；1954年8月当选第一届全国人民代表大会代表，与毛泽东主席交谊甚深并受到过接见；1953年1月文化部授予其荣誉奖状及“人民艺术家”称号；1955年12月德意志民主共和国艺术科学院授予其通讯院士荣誉状；1956年4月世界和平理事会授予其1955年度国际和平奖金，9月举行授奖仪式；1963年被世界和平理事会推举为世界文化名人。
