每年的3月8日是国际妇女节，又称“联合国妇女权益和国际和平日”（U.N. Day for Women's Rights andInternational Peace）或“三八国际妇女节”，是为庆祝妇女在经济、政治和社会等领域做出的重要贡献和取得的巨大成就而设立的节日。国际妇女节的起源可以追溯到1857年3月8日，当天，美国纽约的制衣和纺织女工走上街头，为抗议恶劣的工作条件和低薪而举行罢工和游行。在随后的几十年里，类似的抗议活动不断发生，1911年的美国纽约三角工厂发生的火灾致使140多名女工丧命，而恶劣的工作条件被认为是导致重大伤亡的主要原因，这一事件使得维护妇女权益的问题成为社会舆论的焦点。1975年联合国宣布将3月8日定为国际妇女节，这一天也逐渐成为世界各地的妇女团体都庆祝的节日。

International Working Woman's Day is celebrated on March 8celebrating political and social awareness of the struggle of womenworldwide. In many countries, the celebration has lost itspolitical meaning and has become a holiday like either Mother's Dayor Valentine's Day. The first International Working Woman's Dayallegedly occurred in New York City on March 8, 1857 with garmentworkers protesting their poor working conditions and low pay. Theprotesters were said to have been attacked and dispersed by police.Many protests happened in following years until InternationalWorking Woman's Day was observed on February 28, 1909. Followingthe Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York City that killedover 140 garment workers, the holiday gained momentum. The U.N.declared International Working Woman's Day a holiday in 1975 and itis observed by many countries around the world.
