Lill was a young French Canadian girl who grew up in the farming community. At the age of 16, her father thought that she had enough schooling and forced her to drop out of school to contribute to the family income. In 1922, with limited education and skills, the future didn’t look bright for Lill. Her father demanded that Lill find a job as soon as possible, but she didn’t have confidence to ask for a job.
One day, Lill gathered her courage and knocked on her very first door. She was met by Margaret Costello, the office manager. In her broken English, Lill told her she was interested in the secretarial position. Margaret decided to give her a chance.
Margaret sat her down at a typewriter and said, ―Lill, let’s see how good you really are.‖ She directed Lill to type a single letter, and then left. Lill looked at the clock and saw that it was 11:40 am. Everyone would be leaving for lunch at noon. She thought she should at least attempt the letter.
On her first try, she got through one line but made four mistakes. She pulled the paper out and threw it away. The clock now read 11:45. ―At noon,‖ she said to herself.
On her second attempt, things didn’t get any better. Again she started over and finally completed the letter, full of mistakes, though. She looked at the clock: 11:55 ----- five minutes to freedom.
Just then, Margaret walked in. She came directly over to Lill and put one hand on the desk and the other on the girl’s shoulder. She read the letter and paused. Then she said, ―Lill, you are doing good work!‖
Lill was surprised. She looked at the letter, then up at Margaret. With those simple words of encouragement, her desire to escape disappeared and her confidence began to grow. She thought, ― Well, if she thinks it’s good, then it must be good. I think I’ll stay!‖
Lill did stay at the Carhartt Overall Company for 51 years, through two world wars and 11 presidents ----- all because someone had the insight to give a shy and uncertain young girl the gift of self-confidence when she knocked on the door.

Congratulations on deciding to visit the Big Apple. Whether you choose to spend time in the Metropolitan Museum of Art or an S&M club in the west Village, or both, you’re in for quite an experience. NYC(New York City) isn’t nearly as crazy or dangerous as movies make it out to be, so relax and enjoy its intrinsic weirdness.
Instructions to get there
New York City, being a major metropolis, can be accessed in many ways: by plane, train, bus or car.
Flying: There are three major airports people usually fly into when traveling to New York. La Guardia is the closest to Manhattan, and is located in the borough of Queens. JFK international Airport is also in Queens, but a little farther from Manhattan. Newark is in New Jersey and is by far the farthest from the city.
Train: Amtrak(美国铁路公司) trains arrive constantly in Penn Station, which is located at 7th Avenue and 34th Street. Penn Station is conveniently located in the heart of Manhattan and can be accessed via subway and taxis. Metro North, a light-rail system that runs from Connecticut to New York, is another convenient way to get into the city if you happen to be nearby. Those trains come into Grand Central Station, which is located at 42nd Street and Park Avenue.
Bus: For those of you on a tight budget (or who are just plain cheap but have a lot of time on 2
your hands), the bus is always an option. Buses----- run by several companies including Greyhound, Trailways, Peter Pan and New Jersey Transit----- are usually much cheaper than trains and planes, and they are just as convenient, arriving at Port Authority, located at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue. Of course, buses take longer and have smellier bathrooms.
Driving: If you choose to drive to New York City, your best bet is to find a garage as soon as you arrive and park your car for the duration of the trip. Driving and parking in the city are both impossible, and will certainly make your trip miserable. Since New York has excellent public transportation and thousands of taxis, you really don’t need your car if you are staying in Manhattan.

6. Which one shows the right order of airports’ distance from New York City?

7. If you are on vacation but don’t have enough money, which transportation is your best choice?
A. Plane B. Train C. Bus D. Car
.
A. its high cost B. taking a long time
C. unpleasant smell D. parking the car

Most parents and teachers want children to be happy. To that end, parents find themselves doing things for kids to make them happy, like buying gifts, taking them for ice cream, playing games together, or helping with homework.
Teachers are constantly doing things for children too, like bringing treats to class, planning fun trips, and supporting students in other immeasurable ways.
Do acts of kindness toward children make us happier parents and teachers? Of course they do. Unfortunately, we don’t make children happy by simply enabling them to be receivers of kindness. We increase their feelings of happiness and well-being by teaching them to be givers of kindness.
they are socialized to think more about themselves than others.
How do we change this and improve children’s well-being?
A recent study, Kindness Counts, conducted by researchers from the University of British 3
Columbia and the University of California, broke new ground by showing the benefits gained by teens when they were taught happiness-increasing skills.
For a month, several hundred 9-11-year-olds performed and recorded three acts of kindness each week for anyone they wished. Another several hundred kept track of three pleasant places they visited during the week.
Not surprisingly, the results were consistent with adult studies. When kids performed acts of kindness or took notice of the pleasant places they visited during the week, they significantly increased feelings of happiness and satisfaction.
But those who performed acts of kindness received an additional benefit. Measuring how well children were liked or accepted by their peers (同伴), the study showed those who performed acts of kindness gained an average of 1.5 friends during the four-week period – good support for the idea that ―nice guys finish first.‖
9. What do most parents and teachers do to make children happy?
A. Do good deeds for them.
B. Take them to see funny things.
C. Teach them the secret of happiness.
D. Develop their happiness-increasing skills.
10. The underlined word ―altruistic‖ in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to ―_____‖.
A. optimistic B. energetic C. curious D. generous
11. What can be concluded from the study?
A. Children can change their attitudes easily. B. Happy people are likely to do good deeds.
C. Acts of kindness are the key to happiness. D. Visits to places lead to much more happiness.
