Before the Entrance Examinations to Senior High School, our teachers arranged a visit for us to the No. 4 High School in Beijing. The school made a deep impression on me.
No. 4 High School is located at the center of Beijing, and has a history of 90 years. It is one of the most well-known schools in the city with over 2,000 students and about 180 teachers. First, the school president showed us around. The school looks like a beautiful garden with flowers, green trees, fountains and new buildings everywhere. It has only senior students, divided into three grades and 38 classes, and apparently there are more boys than girls. Then, we went to the meeting hall. The person, who was in charge of teaching , introduced their school and courses. The teachers here are excellent and have either masters degrees or doctors degrees. They love their students and their work. Fourteen subjects are taught in the school, including mathematics, Chinese, physics, chemistry, English, and so on. The students are excellent, too. They take special interest in their studies and work hard.
The three-hour visit passed quickly. Since then, I have made up my mind that I would like to be one of the students of No. 4 High School in Beijing.
58. The 2008 Olympic Games
Beijing will hold the Olympic Games in 2008. When the news came on July 13th, people both in Beijing and in other cities became too excited to sleep. They gathered in squares and held celebrations. At the same time, people in Beijing realized that it will not be easy to hold the Olympic Games. Many foreign visitors, reporters and sportsmen will come to Beijing at that time. More and more preparation should be done. We have also found many people, both young and old, are learning to speak English. As high-school students in Beijing, we will do more for the Beijing Olympic Games. As for myself, my plan is to study English hard and to be a volunteer to teach English in the community center.
59. A Lost Bag
No sooner had the bell rung than a middle-aged man, accompanied by our teacher, walked into the classroom. All of us looked at one another. Questions were written on every face.
The man stepped onto the stage and said, "I lost my bag on my way to my office two days ago. As I was wondering where I could find it, I received a phonecall. It was a girl, who had picked up my lost bag near a bus-stop and she had found my phone number in the bag. Then I realized I must have lost my bag when I was hurrying to catch the bus. The girl didn't leave until I returned to the bus-stop and got back my bag. But she then left in such a hurry that I had no time to ask her name. I have spent two days visiting the schools nearby. I would
like to thank her."
As he was speaking, our teacher walked to Guanlan Xu and asked her, "Why didn't you tell me the reason when you came to school late the day before yesterday?" At that time, Guanlan had to look up. Before she said anything, the man cried out, "It is her. She is the very person who returned the bag to me!" All the eyes were fixed on Guanlan with appreciation.
60. Weekend Activities
My father is a driver and my mother is a teacher. Both of them work hard during the week. No matter how busy they are, they always manage to take us to our uncle's home at the weekend and work on their farm. The farm is not very big, but there is always so much to do on a farm. I like to look after the animals, taking them to the field, giving them food, and playing with them. My parents help my uncle in the field, while my aunt prepares dinner for us. Sometimes I help in the field, too. It is on the farm that I get to know the meaning of the saying, "A grain, a sweat." After several hours' hard work, we are all hungry and tired. We usually have a big meal, and then go back home in the evening.
61. Christmas
Christmas is coming soon. The radio stations are playing Christmas music. People are busy doing their Christmas shopping. Many families have Christmas trees in their homes and buy decorations for their trees.
This Christmas is significant for our class because our English teacher, Dr. Diesel, will stay with us for this holiday. In order to give him a big surprise, everything is going on behind his back. We are divided into three groups. One group will buy all the decorations for the Christmas tree and for our classroom; one will choose the gifts for Dr. Diesel and everyone. The last group made up of girls will prepare food for our Christmas dinner. It ought to be a wonderful time. We are looking forward to it.
62. A Picnic in the Countryside
Last week we went to the countryside to have a picnic. We bought some sandwiches, fruit and water to take with us for lunch. We started out quite early before there was too much traffic. After two hours of driving, we came to a nice place. It was at the foot of a hill and near a river, with some large trees beside it. As it was a very hot day, we parked the car under a big tree and went for a swim in the river. The water was refreshing. After having a swim we had lunch in
the cool shade under the trees. Then we went for a walk. We saw some beautiful birds and butterflies. After walking for about an hour we returned to the car. However, we couldn't get the car to start. Finally we had to push the car to the road and wait for help. Of course, The car breaking down spoilt our picnic in the end!
63. A Geography Group
Last term I took part in a geography research study group. Our topic was environmental pollution and protection. We took a variety of pictures showing the present pollution conditions of our city.
To our surprise, there are still a lot of people doing silly things to our surroundings. Some people throw rubbish anywhere they like; some cars give off harmful gases. What surprises us most is that waste water is poured into rivers by some factories. Worse still, people sometimes have to make their way through dusty winds as a result of the pollution.
Through our research, we come to realize that everybody must pay much attention to our environment. Some measures should be taken to protect it. And to be exact, it is high time to take measures to protect it.
64. Look at Peter's Room
It was said that Peter's room was always in a mess. In fact, it was the messiest among the boys' rooms. However, it looked neat and in order whenever we got there. So we decided to use an unexpected way to find out the truth. One day we went to Peter's room with a ladder. Before we knocked on the door, one of us stepped onto the ladder and had a look from the upper window. What a mess! Peter's things were lying all over the room: on the chair, on the table, under the bed, even on the floor. Peter was sitting on the ground, repairing his tape recorder, while his friend was jumping up and down on his bed. As we knocked at the door, Peter cleared up the mess just by putting all the things under his bed. Peter was too ashamed to say a word after we entered his room and brought his trick to light. He promised to keep his room in order as much as possible after that.
65. Mr. Smith's Cancer
After physical examination, Mr. Smith got his diagnosis, which said he suffered from cancer.
Knowing that, he felt very sad. When he got home, his wife and daughter were waiting for him to have dinner. But he didn't want to eat anything. He went
to his bedroom, wondering what his wife and daughter would live if he...
Some time later, he received a call from his doctor, saying that they made a mistake that the diagnosis was wrong. As soon as he heard that, Mr. Smith jumped with joy, which made both his wife and daughter very surprised.
Everyone should work carefully, trying to make no mistake; otherwise, you will give people so much trouble and suffering. Sometimes a small mistake will lead to great losses.
66. A Shortcut
Since many of his classmates went to various classes after school, Little Ming decided to learn something too. He chose painting. Please to hear his decision, his father bought a model for him and told him, "Watch the model carefully and then paint it on the paper. Paint a hand first. It is easier than other parts." Little Ming looked at the model for a while and then raised his own hands for another look. Suddenly he found an easy way to paint a hand. But Little Ming was proud of his painting and skill, and claimed that he himself was a genius because he knew a shortcut in painting that even famous painters didn't know.
67. An Early Morning Walk
One morning I got up early so I went outdoors for a change. It was so early when I left home that the streets were deserted. Without the usual crowds and traffic, everything was very quiet.
I made my way to the park, and found, to my surprise, that there were so many people there. Some were doing Taijiquan or morning exercises, some were sitting peacefully on the benches, and some were feeding pigeons and making them fly up and down. One or two hours later, I left the park and walked home, feeling much refreshed and very energetic. An old English saying suddenly crept into my mind, "Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise." I do believe it.
68. Helping Father Stop Smoking
One evening, while my family was watching TV in the sitting room, my father began to smoke a cigarette. Soon the room was full of smoke. Mother asked him to stop smoking, but Father said it was too difficult. I sat aside and wondered what I could do. Then I had an idea.
