And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents’ savings were being spent on my college tuition. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn’t interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked far more interesting. It wasn’t all romantic. I didn’t have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends’ rooms. I returned coke bottles for the five-cent deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example: Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed.

Because I had dropped out and didn’t have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and sanserif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can’t capture, and I found it fascinating.

After getting a very clear image of the document, he went to the library and started reading books on ancient languages that are now dead. Strangely enough, John had a hidden talent for languages. He never developed this or any other talent, because he was lazy. He would always look for the easy way to do

In a few hours, he figured out the code of the language and began to decipher the ancient text. It told of a statue, thousands of years old, in the central part of Egypt, hidden in a cave miles from a large pyramid. The text stated that the statue had eight orifices and that the seeker of wealth must place precious gems in each of the holes in the statue. The gems had to be cut in a special way and inserted in a specific manner.

He wasted no time inserting the precious stones into each hole of the statue. Right before his eyes, the eight gems turned to stone, filling the holes, leaving no trace where the holes used to be.

With great disbelief, he stared at his investment of valuable gems, now turned to stones, and wondered what it all meant. Just then, at the foot of the statue, he noticed an inscription, which he could now decipher, which read, “Any fool can create wealth, but only the wise know what to do with it.”

I was always a little in awe of Great-aunt Stephina Roos. Indeed, as children we were all frankly terrified of her. The fact that she did not live with the family, preferring her tiny cottage and solitude to the comfortable but rather noisy household where we were brought up, added to the respectful fear in which she was held.

She was a tiny little woman to inspire so much veneration. She was always dressed in black, and her dark clothes melted into the shadows of the living room and made her look smaller than ever. But you felt, the moment she entered, that something vital and strong and somehow indestructible had come in with her, although she moved slowly, and her voice was sweet and soft.

As I grew older I found, rather to my surprise, that I had become genuinely fond of my aloof old great-aunt. But to this day I do not know what strange impulse made me take George to see her and to tell her, before I had confided in another living soul, of our engagement. To my astonishment, she was delighted.

At first I didn’t pay any attention to the room I was in but “the doctor will be with you in a minute” appeared to be longer than sixty seconds so I looked around. On the other wall there was a window overlooking the yard covered with some kind of green bush. In the corner between the ceiling and the wall I noticed a thin spider’s web.

If I had known how much the doctor would spoil my day, I wouldn’t have gone to see him at all. But what could I do? The pain was the pain and I had to get rid of it somehow. The nearest drug store sold me the medicine for forty dollars so I spent four hundred and twenty dollars all together just to know that if I like I can have a surgery.

As one of the Polish sayings goes — the further in, the deeper. I had been sinking in something that was hard to believe in — the sea of question marks. Why did I have to have surgery if I didn’t need it? Why did I have to spend eight thousand dollars if I could solve the problem with ten dollars? Why did I have to use medicine for forty dollars if I could swallow pills for five bucks? Why did I have to pay for the first visit if I wasn’t sure that I would come to see the same doctor again? Why? Why? Why?

“Supposedly, new evidence has been found identifying a person connected to a four-year-old robbery case in Portland, Oregon, and a fingerprint was able to be matched with one of the perpetrators at the last crime scene,” reporting from Channel 10 news scrolls across the TV screen in bold letters. A picture was shown on the screen, identified by the fingerprint.Lindsey looked at the photo and went into shock because it was her or her twin sister Sara being accused of the robberies. Lindsey and Sara were identical twin sisters and their personalities were the only key to telling one from the other. Lindsey was quiet and conservative, while Sara enjoyed partying with her friends. Sara was killed last year in a car accident. She was hit by a drunk driver and died instantly, before the paramedics arrived on the scene.

Furthermore, Lindsey had been getting these strange dreams recently at night, in which she was the perpetrator. Some dreams involved her robbing an elderly couple in broad daylight of their vehicle and expensive jewels.Other dreams involved her torturing and burning an old man on his chest and face with an iron pipe as he was tied to his bed in his home. Lindsey was unclear as to why she was having these images, nor did she know where these crimes had taken place. She replayed the broadcast message in her mind and wondered if her images and the robberies had any connection.
