The Day We Went to a Hospital to See an AIDS Sufferer
Last Sunday all of our class together with our head teacher went to a hospital to see an AIDS sufferer. We bought a bunch of flowers and a basket of fruit to send to the patient. The female patient was very glad to see us. She told us that most of the people avoided seeing her since she was told that she carried the HIV virus. The doctor told us that the HIV virus wouldn’t be infected through daily communication. People in China are often ignorant of the disease and look down upon those who suffer from AIDS, which is wrong.
During our stay there, we talked with the woman about her family and our school life. Some students sent her books and their favorite CDs. She was greatly touched and said in tears that she would be optimistic and confident of overcoming the disease. Our teacher hugged her goodbye and promised we would come to see her often.
On our way back to school, I was thinking that if everyone of us loves each other more and gives a hand when others are in trouble, the world will become more beautiful.

On a Harmonious Dormitory Life
Dormitory life is an indispensable part of college life. But sometimes the harmony in the dormitory will be disturbed in one way or another. For example, some members listen to music late into the night and make those light sleepers restless. Worse still, the smell of some students’ socks is powerful enough to drive other members out of the room..
As is known to all, a harmonious dormitory life is important to college students and benefits all the members. On one hand, we can have a good rest and put our heart into study. On the other hand, we will have a good mood and enjoy being together. In contrast, an unharmonious life will be depressing and counterproductive.
There are several ways to create and maintain a harmonious dormitory life. Firstly, you have to evaluate your life style and try to get rid of your dirty habits, if there are any. Secondly, when an annoying situation arises, you will just have to learn to tolerate each other and co-exist. Thirdly you will have to share with each other and make good friends.
In conclusion, we should try our best to build a harmonious dormitory life for the sake of good study and good life.

Long Holidays
Generally speaking, long holidays are good for us students. On the one hand, we have a lot of time to study by ourselves and thus improve weaknesses and further develop strengths. On the other hand, we can take part-time jobs and make ourselves better prepared for social life.
But every coin has two sides. Some students fail to make food use of their time and they are addicted to various computer games. I am afraid that they are likely to ruin themselves in this way.
As far as I am concerned, I will try to make the best use of my precious time. I will spend most of my holidays studying English for I am very poor at it. In addition, I will take a part-time job as private teacher. By this means, I can earn some money and put my knowledge into practice as well.

Will Computers Replace Us?
As is the case we can see, the rapid development of computer technology is exerting profound impact on our life, almost in every aspect. In addition to the use in working , computers are finding their way into the home. They are so intelligent that they seem to be able to solve all problems, consequently, some say that it will sooner or later take the place of human beings.
As for me, I firmly hold the view that there is no such possibility on the grounds that computers are but machines, made by humans. They can only do as humans instruct them and our tasks are far too complicated for any machines to undertake.
For human, there is one thing that computers can never accomplish, that is, the former can make decision by their own while the latter can do nothing unless they are programmed.

A Trip to…
One Saturday afternoon, we took a bicycle to a small village several miles from the city. The weather was fair and the breeze gentle.
On arriving at the village, the beautiful sight immediately made us forget the tiredness from the journey. Most of the houses were built of yellow bricks and white stones. In the center of the village, there is a small pond with a few geese swimming in the water. They appeared to be happy. We walked to a level spot on a hill and took a rest there. We listened to the songs of the birds and
the murmur of the streams. When the sun was going down, we saw at a distance a few little boys on cow backs, singing and laughing happily on their way home.
We enjoyed the peace and the beauty of the village so much that decided to come here again some day.

Dear Sir/Madam:
I am a Chinese student who will graduate from college in the coming July and wishes to study for M.A. degree in your university. My plan is to start my course next term, and I would be grateful if you would be kind enough to provide me with the information below.
First, what are the qualifications needed for studying as a graduate student in you r university? I am going to take a bachelor’s degree from Beijing University, but I wonder if there are any further academic requirements. Do I need to take the GRE test? Second, how much are the tuition fees? Although I intend to be self-supporting, I wonder if there are any scholarships available for international students. Third, what about the accommodation? I would prefer a single room, which is more conductive to studying. But if single rooms are expensive, I would be willing to share.
I’m looking forward to your early reply, and to attending your prestigious institution.
Sincerely,
Zhang Tao

Some Suggestions to the President of Our University
June 20,2006
Dear Mr. President,
I am writing to put up some suggestion concerning our teaching and campus life.
As a sophomore from the Math Dept., I am quite satisfied with the present condition of our university, but I’d like to say that there is still some room for improvement.
First, I believe that more attention should be paid to the guidance of our study methods. To some extent, university students are capable of studying by themselves, but more often than never, we find ourselves at a loss to choose good books to read and appropriate topics for our research. It is clear that we need some advice from our teacher. If our teachers can lecture more on “how to learn by yourself” for us, especially for the freshmen, our skills will be further improved.
Second, more activities should be conducted to make our campus life more colorful. I’m sorry to say that the present life on campus is quite boring. Every day we have classes, read in the library, or stay in the dorm. Life here is routine. We need more meaningful activities organized to enrich our college life and enable us to study more efficiently.
I hope you can consider my suggestions. Thank you .
Yours sincerely,
Li Ming

City Problems
Nowadays, millions of migrant workers flock into cities in search of jobs and better living. However, with the
rising in the urban population, many problems arise in the development of cities.
Firstly, cities become more and more crowded, putting much pressure upon transportation, housing, sanitation, education, employment and so on. City services and facilities have been strained to a breaking point. Secondly, a growing number of private cars emit a huge amount of carbon dioxide, leaving the air mercilessly polluted. What’s more, the city is also threatened by an increase in crime. There is not a single day passing without the report of someone being robbed, kidnapped or even murdered.
Last but not least, city-dwellers are not only separated from the nature but also isolated from each other, even knowing the name of their next-door neighbor.
All these problems have harmed the attractiveness of the city. More and more people may seek to live in suburbs if there isn’t any improvement.

Don’t Push the Pupils Too Hard
It is said that childhood is the most wonderful time of one’s life. But that is not necessarily the case,. Look around and you will see many pupils have too much pressure to study. Recent studies show that an increasing number of pupils are tired of schooling.
Who are to blame for this alarming tendency? Teachers, parents and the whole society should be responsible. At present, many teachers expect their pupils to do more work than they can handle, because schools are competing with each other for a higher proportion of pupils entering key schools and universities. Meanwhile, parents are pinning their hope on their only child in the hope that they can have a brilliant future if they learn as much as possible. Ultimately, fierce competition in society requires children’s sacrifice of their happy childhood for a position in the future. Under such circumstances most pupils have no choice but to exhaust themselves to deal with the pressure from teachers, parents and society. Consequently, they grow to enjoy schooling less and less.
We ought to take correct attitude toward children’s education. A child’s total personality doesn’t involve academic achievement alone, and children are sure to choose different paths to better prospect for their different personalities. Personally, I think we must encourage children to take part in some social activities while at school to enjoy their lives in a meaningful way.

A passion for sports has taken possession of thousands of people. One of the reasons perhaps is that sports provide an outlet for pent-up emotions. People extract themselves from routine life and fully express their feeling towards sports. Stimulated by the excitement, they applaud for the victory and hold their breath for the exhilarating competition. In a sense, sports is a haven for people to escape from boredom and tension.(分析问题)
Enthusiasm for sports also reflects people’s desire to transcend geographical and cultural limits. Free from border and language difference, sports are accessible to everyone. People will no longer be confined to a certain living circle. They can share the same fantasy with the viewers at another hemisphere. Taken by sports, they can float freely from country to country, continent to continent. Sports thus become a common language for all the people throughout the world.(简单总结)
