阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
Last year my husband developed a terrible disease. Dale became fearful of going anywhere alone or of being alone as some of his seizures(发作)were quite severe, even putting him in the hospital on three separate occasions.
We decided that a trained medical service dog would greatly help Dale. It would be a companion for Dale, and the dog would be trained to stay with him. If he had a seizure, with a service dog beside a downed person, others could see and would be more likely to help.
A local person sold us a black Labrador puppy at a reduced price. Nevaeh was eight weeks old when we got her. At that point, we turned to the local papers for help. We hoped that getting Dale‘s
story out would help raise funds to pay for the puppy‘s training. Dale has been on disability, and his need to have someone with him at all times means I can not work either. We don‘t have a lot of money left over at the end of the month.
Fundraising started off with the help of family donations, but we had a long way to go. Then one day there was a knock at the door. I went to answer it; a stranger stood there holding the newspaper article about Dale in her hand. She introduced herself as June and told me that her daughter‘s dog had warned her of a cancer she never knew she had, probably saving her life. Now, $100! We never expected such caring and kindness from a complete stranger.
Dale had been feeling the world didn‘t care, but this help renewed his faith. The next thing that happened was that Dale emailed local vets, asking for care for our puppy. We received a response from Dr. Noonan, who has since provided Nevaeh‘s care for free. The staff and the vet are the most loving, caring people we have met. They even helped us find a local trainer who cut the training costs by more than half. If it weren‘t for such amazing people, Dale probably would have become a total recluse, feeling he could never go anywhere alone.
56.Why did the couple think a medical service dog would be of great help?
A.Dale would not be so lonely, and would get well again soon.
B.It could accompany Dale and in a seizure, it could save Dale.
C.People are more likely to save a person if he is a dog lover.
D.It could accompany Dale, and when a seizure cane, it could attract people to help.
57.What made Dale gain confidence again?

B.A lady‘s offering an amount of money to him.
C.The vets‘ offering to help.
D.His being able to go anywhere.
58.Why did the couple think the staff and the vet are the most loving, caring people they have met?
A.They provided the puppy‘s care for free.
B.They trained the puppy for the couple.
C.They provided the puppy‘s care for free and cut the training cost by half.
D.They not only provided the puppy‘s care for free but also found a trainer with less than half
the cost.
59.What does the underlined sentence ―She felt obliged to help…‖ mean?
A.She felt it a duty to help.
B.She felt she was forced to help.

A.To show how important a good service dog is.
B.To show a united family is important.

The two things—snow and mountains—which are needed for a ski area are the two things that cause avalanches, large mass of snow and ice crushing down the side of a mountain—often called ―White Death.‖
It was the threat of the avalanche and its record as a killer of man in the western mountains that created the snow ranger. He first started on avalanche control work in the winter of 1937—38 at Alta, Utah, in Wasatch National Forest.
This mountain valley was becoming well known to skiers. It was dangerous. In fact, more than 120 persons had lost their lives in 1936 and another 200 died in 1937 as a result of avalanches before it became a major ski area. Thus, development of Alta and other major ski resorts in the west was dependent upon controlling the avalanche. The Forest Service set out to do it with its corps of snow rangers. It takes many things to make a snow ranger. The snow ranger must be in excellent physical condition. He must be a good skier and a skilled mountain climber. He should have at least a high school education, and the more college course in geology, physics, and related fields he has, the better.
He studies snow, terrain, wind, and weather. He learns the conditions that produce avalanches. He learns to forecast avalanches and to bring them roaring on down the mountainsides to reduce their killing strength. The snow ranger learns to do this by using artillery(大炮), by blasting with TNT, and by the difficult and skillful art of skiing avalanches down.
The snow ranger, dressed in a green parka which has a bright yellow shoulder patch, means safety for people on ski slopes. He pulls the trigger on a 75 mm. recoilless rifle, skis waist deep in powder testing snow stability, or talks with the ski area‘s operator as he goes about his work to protect the public from the hazards(危险)of deep snow on steep mountain slopes.
61.The snow rangers are employees of A.the Forest Service B.the Resource Bureau
C.the Tourist Board D.the Sports Bureau
62.A snow ranger himself must be A.a college graduate B.a physicist

64.The primary duty of the snow ranger is .
A.To make sure ski area operators are following safety rules
B.To predict and control avalanches in mountainous areas
C.To check skis and repair them
D.To forecast the weather
65. A.knows how to use a pistol
B.must write lengthy reports on his work
C.may travel many miles when he is on duty
D.has a long working day

In the modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is had; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit(追求)of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: ―I may have lost, but it doesn‘t matter because I really didn‘t try.‖ What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be the measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one‘s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve(缓解)can we discover a new meaning in competition.
66.What does this passage mainly talk about?
A.Competition helps to set up self-respect.
B.Opinions about competition are different among people.
C.Competition is harmful to personal quality development.
D.Failures are necessary experiences in competition.
67.Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?
A.It pushes society forward.
B.It builds up a sense of duty.
C.It improves personal abilities.
D.It encourages individual effects.
68.―The most vocal‖ underlined in Paragraph 3 refer to those who A.try their best to win
B.value competition most highly
C.are against competition most strongly
D.rely on others most for success
69.What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a ―desire to fail‖?
A.One‘s worth lies in his performance compared with others‘.
B.One‘s success in competition needs great efforts.
C.One‘s achievement is determined by his particular skills.
D.One‘s success is based on how hard he has tried.
70.Which point of view may the author agree to ?
A.Every effort should be paid back.
B.Competition should be encouraged.
C.Winning should be a life-and-death matter.
D.Fear of failure should be removed in competition.
D
Every year in developing countries, a million people die from urban air pollution and twice that number from exposure to stove smoke inside their homes, another 3 million unfortunates die prematurely every year from water-related diseases. All told, premature deaths and illnesses arising from environmental factors account for about a fifth of all diseases in poor countries, bigger than any other preventable factors, including malnutrition.
The link between environment and poverty is central to that great race for sustainability(可持续发展). It is a pity, then, that several powerful fallacies(谬论)keep getting in the way of sensible debate. One popular myth is that trade and economic growth make poor countries‘ environmental problems worse. Growth, it is said, brings with it urbanization(城市化), higher energy consumption(消耗)and industrialization—all factors that contribute to pollution and threaten our health.
Another common view is that poor countries should pollute now and clean up later. Certainly poor countries should not be made to adopt American or European environmental standards. But there is evidence to suggest that poor countries can and should try to handle some environmental problems now, rather than wait till they have become richer.
One powerful—and until recently ignored—weapon in the fight for a better environment is local people. Much academic research has shown that the poor are of the victims of resource consumption: it tends to be rich locals or outsiders who are responsible for the worst exploitation. Local people usually have a better knowledge of local ecological conditions than experts in faraway capitals, as well as a direct interest in improving the quality of life in their village.
71. A.in developing countries 5 million people die from environmental factors each year
B.in developing countries 3 million people lose their lives each year because of water
shortage
C.in developing countries environmental factors are the biggest cause for abnormal death
D.in developing countries more people die from malnutrition
72.According to the author, which of the following contributes most to environmental problems in
poor countries?
A.Poverty. B.Urban air pollution.
C.Water-related diseases. D.trade and economic growth.
73.As for the view that trade and economic growth make poor countries‘ environmental problems
worse, the author regards it as A.reasonable B.absurd
C.interesting D.sensible
74.The main idea of Paragraph 3 is .
A.poor countries should pollute now and clean up later
B.poor countries should take environmental problems seriously as early as possible
C.poor countries should follow American or European environmental standards
D.some poor countries hold a false guideline in tackling environmental problems
75.According to the author, people who can play an important role in settling environmental
problem are A.rich locals B.outsiders
C.environmental experts D.local residents

第四部分:书面表达(共两节,满分45分)
第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题。(请注意问题后的字数要求)
We had just finished 13 miles of hiking in the Smokey Mountains. We were tired and our muscles ached as we made our way back to New England. The cramped (狭窄的) car ride to the airport followed by a two-hour flight left our legs in a worse condition.
When I heard that two seats in first class on our next flight were available for a small upgraded (升级) fee, I jumped at the opportunity and paid the fee. Our spirits lifted immediately. At least we would end our adventure in comfort and style.
Our travel has always been arranged on a budget, so flying first class was a new experience for us. As we boarded the plane, we felt as if we were part of an elite (精英) group. We took our seats and were happy to join the other few passengers who could fly in such luxury. It was almost as if we had a sense of pride to be sitting with the group of people that surrounded us.
As we chatted away about hiking, waterfalls and bears, I could hear people around us talking about busy schedules and business meetings.
We noticed that the stewardess (空中小姐) was working non-stop to ensure the comfort of the
first class passengers. I thought about how much she must love her job as she smiled kindly at each person while attending to their needs.
As the stewardess walked by our seats near the end of the flight, I looked at her and said,
―Thank you and I hope you have a great night‖. She stopped at our seats with a look of disbelief on her face, bent down, looked at me and said, ―Excuse me‖. I a rather funny way, almost as if I had asked her a question that she didn‘t know how to answer.
After a few moments the stewardess walked back to our seats. ―I can tell you work with the
public,‖ she said. ―Why do you think so?‖ I asked. She answered very quietly ―because you are the only passenger here to say thank you or stop to say something nice to me tonight and I really appreciate your kindness.‖
The sense of belonging to the elite group of people in first class disappeared as we heard her
words. Our seats in luxury offered us more than a comfortable ride. We were reminded that without kindness, we would be flying in no class.
76.What is the best title of the passage? (Please answer within 10 words.)
77.Which sentence in the passage is the closest in meaning to the following one?
The quality of the elite group of people is not as high as we could imagine.
78.Fill in the blank in Paragraph 6 with proper words. (Please answer within 10 words.)
79.What can we infer through the reaction of the stewardess to the kindness shown to her? (Please
answer within 10 words.)
80.Translate the underlined sentence in the forth paragraph into Chinese.

Get Rid of Bad Habits and Greet Civilization
Our school has now started an activity called ―Build Civilized Classes and a Harmonious Campus‖. The topic is ―Get Rid of Bad Habits and Greet Civilization‖.
It must be pointed out that bad habits do exist in our school. Some students throw rubbish everywhere or spit in pubic. Some wear long hair. What is worse, others are even addicted to smoking and drinking. These bad habits have produced negative effects on the healthy development of the students‘ morality.
We require that the students break away from these bad habits. The students are urged to wear their school uniform and be polite to others. During the activity, we‘ll hold a picture show, a competition of classroom and dormitory decorations and so on. The measures are expected to produce positive results.
We all hope that we‘ll build each class into a civilized one and our campus into a harmonious place.

W:I just read an interesting fact. Did you know that people who spend less than ten minutes in a
store are five times more likely to buy things than those who spend half an hour there?
M:I read that article, too. But I think, if someone has been in a store for ten minutes, he usually has
something special to buy.
W:And someone who spends more time there may be just looking?
M:Exactly. Haven‘t you ever gone into a store, thinking you‘d buy something, and then talked
yourself out of it?
W:Yes, I have, especially when I thought I could get it for less elsewhere, or I really didn‘t need it
at all.
M:Exactly. But if you run in to buy something special and have very little time, you pick it up, pay
for it immediately, and then leave.
W:That‘s true. Maybe we should learn a lesson from that:take your time and you‘ll spend less
money.
(Text 7)
M: You don‘t look too happy. What seems to be the problem?
W: I‘ve got to write a long composition for my English class, and I just can‘t come up with any ideas, and it is due tomorrow.
M: That shouldn‘t be too difficult. Remember those pictures you were showing me last week? W: Sure, I‘ve got them here some place.
M: Why don‘t you write something of the camel ride that you took?
W: That sounds like a good idea. I can also tell about our visit to North Africa.
M: Well, now that you‘re feeling better, I think I‘ll be on my way. I‘ve got to finish my composition, too.
W: Thanks for your help. I‘m much more relaxed now and once I get organized, it won‘t be so difficult.
(Text 8)
M: Excuse me, but could you tell me how to get to the railway station?
W: Yes, you‘ll have to take a No. 45 bus.

W: Yes, when you get off the bus, you will find the station just in front of you.
M: Good, but where is the bus stop?
W: Go straight along the road and turn right at the first crossing. You can‘t miss it.
M: Thank you. How soon can I get there?
W: Well, if the streets are not too crowded, you will get there in about half an hour.
M: Thank you very much.
W: You are welcome.
(Text 9)
W: Can I help you?
M: Yes, I‘m looking for a flat.
W: To buy or to rent?
M: Oh, to rent.
W: How much do you want to pay?
M: About two hundred a month.
W: Well, I‘ve got one here in Sydney Road. It‘s two hundred and fifty a month.
M: How big is it?
W: It has a kitchen-diner, a bathroom and one bedroom.
M: Well, actually, I‘d prefer something a bit bigger if that‘s possible.
W: Yes, I think so. Here‘s an interesting one. It‘s opposite the park.
M: How much is it?
W: It‘s three hundred a month. It‘s the biggest flat we‘ve got in this area.
M: What‘s it like?
W: Well, there are two bedrooms, a sitting room, a kitchen and a bathroom.
M: It sounds very interesting. Can I go and see it?
W: Of course, sir. Can I have your name and address?
(Text 10)
Harry was a handsome young man with good manners.
One morning he was walking along a street on his way to visit a friend. He did not want to be early or late. He had forgotten to put on his watch so he went up to a man who was waiting for a taxi.
―Excuse me, sir,‖ he said, very politely, ―but could you tell me the time?‖
The man, who was very well dressed and looked quite rich, said nothing. He did not even look at Harry.
Harry spoke to him again. ―Excuse me, sir,‖ he said, ―but could you please tell me what time it is?‖
This time the man looked at him, but he did not speak and looked quickly away.
Harry thought to himself:Well, he isn‘t unable to hear. He must be just impolite.
―Why won‘t tell me the time, sir?‖ he demanded.
The man turned towards him and said, ―Try to understand me. I am standing here waiting for a taxi. You come up to me and ask me for the time. If I tell it to you, you will thank me. I will say, ‗That‘s all right.‘ You may then say, ‗It‘s a beautiful day,‘ to which I may reply ‗Yes, I like these sunny winter days.‘ Before we know what is happening we have a friendly conversation. You are a pleasant, polite young man and so when my taxi comes, I offer you a ride. You accept. We talk. I like you. You like me. I invite you to my home. You meet my daughter. She is a very pretty girl. You are a good-looking man. You like each other. Soon you fall in love. You want to marry. Now do you understand my problem?‖
Harry shook his head.
―No sir, I‘m sorry, I don‘t. Everything you have said seems very natural to me.‖
―Exactly,‖ the man said, ― and I do not want my daughter to marry a man who is too poor to buy a watch. Good morning to you.‖
And with these words he hurried away.
