17.While Lee Kuan Yew is known throughout the world, few peopleoutside the Chinese-language communities know the true meaning ofKuan Yew. In Chinese language,"kuan" means light, and"yew" means glory. So, Lee KuanYew means Lee the "light andglory".
Singapore's glory since its rebirth in 1965 has been a miracle, largely because of the light of Lee. By 1978, the transformation ofSingapore into a modern city-state had become an inspiration forDeng Xiaoping, who having just emerged as the paramount leader ofChina was looking for a way to lead the country out of isolationand poverty. Drawing inspiration from Lee and the success story ofSingapore, Deng visited the city-state in 1978 and met with Lee forthe first time. Lee said that if Singaporeans can do it, China canalso do it.
Soon after returning from Singapore, Deng launched a series ofreforms in China. Over the subsequent decades, China has continuedthe reform and opening-up and it is now the second-largest economyin the world. Perhaps it could be said that part of the plan forChina's great reform and transformation took shape in Singapore in1978 during Deng's meetings with Lee. Ever since that fatefulvisit, China has learned from Singapore the finer points ofgovernance, management and economic growth. No wonder, over theyears China has sent many Party, government and corporate officialsto receive training in Singapore.
In 1994, the Singapore Industrial Park in Suzhou, Jiangsuprovince (now renamed the Suzhou Industrial Park) was set up. Overthe years, the industrial park has become a testing ground for manynew reform programs in China, including those for social security, venture capital and private equity.
More recently, President Xi Jinping emphasized that China canstill learn many things from Singapore.
Today, many people talk about the 21st century being the"Asian century" or the"Asia-Pacific century", whileothers have started talking of the "Asiandream". But Lee was one of the first Asians whotruly stood out and demonstrated to the world that Asians can makea difference in terms of global growth and development. Lee'slegacy is based on a solid and healthy dosage of pragmatism, realism, innovation, and commitment to making a bettertomorrow.
After 50 years of constant innovation and ceaseless efforts,Singapore is the most developed country among the 10 ASEAN memberstates, one of the most developed countries in Asia and one of themost successful economies in the world. Rather than being caught upin the day-to-day travails, Lee always chose to stand on the top ofthe mountain and look beyond the horizon to see deep into thefuture, which made him a leader of wisdom, courage and vision.

20.For centuries, medical pioneers have refined a variety ofmethods and medicines to treat sickness, injury, and disability, enabling people to live longer and healthier lives.
“A salamander (a small lizard-like animal) can grow back itsleg. Why can't a human do the same?” asked Peruvian-born surgeonDr. Anthony Atala in a recent interview. The question, a referenceto work aiming to grow new limbs for wounded soldiers, captures theinventive spirit of regenerative medicine. This innovative fieldseeks to provide patients with replacement body parts.
These parts are not made of steel; they are the real things ---living cells, tissue, and even organs.
Regenerative medicine is still mostly experimental, withclinical applications limited to procedures such as growing sheetsof skin on burns and wounds. One of its most significant advancestook place in 1999,when a research group at North Carolina’s WakeForest Institute for Regenerative Medicine conducted a successfulorgan replacement with a laboratory-grown bladder. Since then, theteam, led by Dr. Atala, has continued to generate a variety ofother tissues and organs 一 from kidneys to ears.
The field of regenerative medicine builds on work conducted inthe early twentieth century with the first successful transplantsof donated human soft tissue and bone. However, donor organs arenot always the best option. First of all, they are in short supply, and many people die while waiting for an available organ; in theUnited States alone, more than 100,000 people are waiting for organtransplants. Secondly, a patient’s body may ultimately reject thetransplanted donor organ. An advantage of regenerative medicine isthat the tissues are grown from a patient’s own cells and will notbe rejected by the body’s immune system.
Today, several labs are working to create bioartificial bodyparts. Scientists at Columbia and Yale Universities have grown ajawbone and a lung. 21.Every day we are exposed to images, videos, music and news.In this age of visual and aural hyper-stimulation, the medium ofradio is making a great comeback.
“We’re at the beginning of a golden age of audio,” said US-basedpodcaster Alex Blumberg in an article in The Sydney MorningHerald. In the last month alone, 15 percent of US adultslistened to a radio podcast (播客). These statistics, released byEdison Research, show the successful evolution of traditional radiobroadcasts to the present day’s digital podcast format. The term“podcast” was invented in 2004, but the trend only started gainingmainstream popularity in recent years. With the sharp increase inconsumer demand for smartphones and tablets, podcast sales havejumped.
The appeal of the podcast partly lies in its multiplatformdelivery and on-demand capabilities (功能). You can listen duringthose extra minutes of the day when you’re walking to the shops, waiting in a queue or riding the subway. Similar to televisionshows, podcasts are generally free to download and most offer newcontent every week.
Donna Jackson, 22, Sydney University media graduate, listens topodcasts two or three times a week, via iTurns. “I listen while I’mwandering around the house doing something else. It makescompleting a boring task much more enjoyable… And it’s an easy wayof keeping in touch with what’s going on in the rest of the world,”she said, “I mainly listen to BBC podcasts, but recently I’ve alsobeen listening to This American Life and Serial. Theyhave a special skill to really draw you in.”
Unlike television and music, the audio format has the potentialto create a deep impression on readers. Blumberg says this owes tothe podcast’s ability “to create close relationship and emotionalconnection.” Sydney University undergraduate Hazel Proust, majoringin social work and arts, agrees. “When you’re listening, it feelsas if the voice of the podcast’s storyteller is talking directly toyou. It’s comforting, ” said Proust.

17.The other morning on the subway I sat next to an attractiveyoung blonde woman who was reading something on her iPad. She wasvery well-dressed, carrying a Prada bag with tastefully appliedmake-up indeed, she had an unmistakable air of wealth, materialsuccess and even authority. I suspected she worked as a highly-paidWall Street lawyer or stockbroker or something of that sort. So, Iwas curious to see what she was so focused on. The Wall StreetJournal perhaps? The Economist?
Quite the contrary; rather, she was concentrating on a romancenovel. Then I realized that I have known many women who loveromance novels—smart, attractive, successful, “liberated,” modemfemales who nonetheless find some kind of deep satisfaction andthrill from those hyper-romantic, artificial and extremelyunrealistic tales of handsome, manly heroes falling in love withvirginal women, enduring a series of adventures, then no doubthaving a happy ending.
These romance stories are to literature what hot dogs are tofine food. Yet, the genre(体裁) remains enormously popular.Consider some of these surprising statistics from the good folks atthe Romance Writers of America (RWA):
*More than 9,000 romance titles were released last year, withsales of about $1.44 billion (more than triple the revenuesgenerated by classic literary fiction).
*More than 90 percent of the market are women (okay, that’s notat all surprising).
* Readers are typically women between the ages 30 and 54 who arethemselves involved in a romantic relationship (betraying thestereotype that only lonely women long for these tales of love andadventure).
*Almost 40 percent of romance book consumers have an annualincome of between $50,000 and $99,900 (placing them firmly in themiddle class).
I had thought that romance novels accounted for a very smallshare of the literary market, so I was quite surprised that thispart has such enormous popularity. But I must wonder why so manywomen—forty years after the women’s liberation movement continue toindulge in the fanciful tales?
I’m not sure if it represents a kind of “rejection” of thewomen’s liberation movement, but clearly something is missing inthe lives of contemporary ladies. A romance author named DonnaHatch who focuses on the Regency period (early 19th centuryBritain) explained the appeal of such books this way: “Regency menwere civilized and treated women with courtesy. When a lady enteredthe room, gentlemen stood, doffed their hats, offered an arm, bowed, and a hundred other little things I wish men still didtoday. But they were also very athletic; they hunted, raced, boxed, rode horses. They were manly. Strong. Noble. Honorable. And that iswhy I love them!”
Mrs. Hatch may have expressed the secret desires and attitudesof untold millions of her peers---that is, in the early 21stcentury, have women grown tired of the burdens and expectationsthat the “freedoms” they have gained give them? Is this a rejectionof modem feminism? Do women long for days of old when men weremasculine gentlemen and women were feminine and protected asprecious treasures and regarded as possessions?
Perhaps most women (even the ones who get lost in romancenovels) do not want to go all the way back but it is obvious,▲ .

18.An old man in a faded yellow shirt sat in a windowless roomon a raised concrete form. The only source of heat came fromsomewhere beneath the plastic mattress and the rough blanket theblank-faced police woman had handed him after taking his thumbprints. He heard voices and metallic clang as the cell door swungopen.
At the front desk a tired looking policeman handed the old manback his belongings, his worn-out cap and the Seiko watch that hadstopped working the day his beloved Evelyn left. The policemandramatically held the blue plastic bag at an arm’s length to theold man who took it and made sure its contents were undamaged: thegoat meat, palm oil, leaves and spices. He ignored the confused on the officer’s face and signed the document declaringhe had been returned the possessions they had taken off him thenight before.
No one spoke to him as he walked slowly towards the exit.
“Mr. Easy-nwa?” He stopped and prayed to the God who now tookcare of Evelyn to please take him far away from this unhappy placeof less faces, clipped accents and people who did noteven attempt to pronounce his name right.
“Ezenwa,” He said and looked at a woman with tangerine lips, hername tag said Jessica Harlow, Social Services. “A bit far fromhome”,she said as she drove fast and with confidence the way Evelynused to. He wondered if she meant the 50 miles from Liverpool orthe 50,000 miles from Enugu,a city in Nigeria. He did not botherreplying as this woman had plenty to say about the weather, baddrivers, her daughter’s school play...
At last she drew up outside the block of flats where helived.
“Got here in the end”,said she seriously, “Really Mr. Easy-nwa,if you keep getting lost, we will have to consider moving you intoa home”.
“No need, I was not lost,”he answered.
He carefully rolled up the sleeves of the oversize bomber jackethe wore and turned on the tap to wash his hands, relieved the pipeswere not frozen. In a clean pan he placed the chopped pieces ofgoat meat. The herbs and spices that had taken him three months totrack down, the uziza seeds had taken him into the heart of GranbyMarket in Liverpool, his uchanwu leaves down a shady back alley inManchester, and yesterday, among other food items, the finest goatmeat from a Sierra Leonean Butcher in Birmingham. That had takensome time, so much he missed the last train and when the policefound him shivering outside the locked up station, so cold hecouldn’t answer loudly enough the pink-faced big copper who yelledin his face, “What’s your name sir?” spraying his face with spittle(吐沫)as he did so, leaving them with no choice but to search anexhausted, frozen old black man and finding him in possession ofmysterious condiments (调味品)including a bag of dried bitter-leafwhich could of course be mistaken for anything that resulted in himgetting read his rights and charged with ...possession?
He lifted the lid of the bubbling soup, the room was filled withthe rich and spicy scent of his culinary (烹饪的)effort. He served twobowls, taking the chipped one and placing the other opposite whereEvelyn would have sat. 19.What’s on Your Pet’s Mind?
In 1977, Irene Pepperberg of Harvard University began studyingwhat was on another creature’s mind by talking to it. Her firstexperiments began with Alex. Alex was a one-year-old African greyparrot and Irene taught him to produce the sounds of the Englishlanguage. “I thought if he learned to communicate, I could ask himquestions about how he sees the world.”
At the time, most scientists didn’t believe animals had anythoughts. They thought animals were more like robots but didn’thave the ability to think or feel. Of course, if you own a pet youprobably disagree. But it is the job of a scientist to prove thisand nowadays more scientists accept that animals can think forthemselves.
“That’s why I started my studies with Alex,” Irene said, “Somepeople actually called me crazy for trying this.”
Nowadays, we have more and more evidence that animals have allsorts of mental abilities. Sheep can recognize faces. Chimpanzees(黑猩猩) use a variety of tools and even use weapons to hunt. And Alexthe parrot became a very good talker.
Thirty years after the Alex studies began. Irene was stillgiving him English lessons up until his recent death. For example,if Alex was hungry he could say “want grape”. Alex could count tosix and was learning the sounds for seven and eight. “He has tohear the words over and over before he can correctly say them.”Irene said, after pronouncing “seven” for Alex a few times in arow. Alex could also tell the difference between colors, shapes, sizes, and materials (e.g. wood and metal). Before he finally died,Alex managed to say “seven”.
Another famous pet that proved some animals have greater mentalskills was a dog called Rico. He appeared on a German TV game showin 2011. Rico knew the names of 200 different toys and easilylearned the names of new ones. When Rico became famous, many otherdog owners wanted to show how clever their pets were. Another dogcalled Betsy could understand 300 words.
One theory for dogs’ ability to learn a language is that theyhave ben close companions to humans for many centuries and so theirability to understand us is constantly evolving (进化). While animalscan’t do what humans do yet, some scientists believe that exampleslike Alex and Rico prove that evolution develops intelligence, aswell as physical appearance.

20.So many of us hold on to little complaints that may have comefrom an argument, a misunderstanding, the way we were raised, orsome other painful event. Stubbornly, we wait for someone else toreach out to us—believing this is the only way we can forgive orrekindle a friendship or family relationship.
A friend of mine, recently told me that she hadn’t spoken to herson in almost three years. She said that she and her son had had adisagreement about his wife and that she wouldn’t speak to himagain unless he called first. When I suggested that she be the oneto reach out, she said, “I can’t do that. He’s the one who shouldapologize.” After a little gentle encouragement, however, she diddecide to be the first one to reach out. To her amazement, her sonwas grateful for her willingness to call and offered an apology ofhis own. As is usually the case when someone takes the chance andreaches out, everyone wins.
Whenever we hold on to our anger, we turn “small stuff(问题)” intoreally “big stuff” in our minds. We start to believe that ourpositions are more important than our happiness. They are not. Ifyou want to be a more peaceful person you must understand thatbeing right is almost never more important than allowing yourselfto be happy. The way to be happy is to let go, and reach out. Letother people be right. This doesn’t mean that you’re wrong.Everything will be fine. You’ll experience the peace of letting go,as well as the joy of letting others be right.
You’ll also notice that, as you reach out and let others be“right,” they will become less defensive and more loving towardyou. They might even reach back. But, if for some reason theydon’t, that’s okay too. You’ll have the inner satisfaction ofknowing that you have done your part to create a more loving world, and certainly you’ll be more peaceful yourself.

21.While other countries debate whether to fix windturbines(涡轮机) offshore or in distant areas, Denmark is buildingthem right in its capital. Three windmills(风车) were recentlyintroduced in a Copenhagen neighbourhood, and the city plans to addanother 97.
“We’ve made a very ambitious commitment to make CopenhagenCO2-neutral by 2025,” Frank Jensen, the mayor, says.“But going green isn’t only a good thing. It’s a must.” The city’scarbon-neutral plan, passed two years ago, will make Copenhagen theworld’s first zero-carbon capital.
With wind power making up 33% of Denmark’s energy supply, thecountry already features plenty of wind turbines. Indeed, among thefirst sights greeting airborne visitors during the landing atCopenhagen’s Kastrup airport is a chain of sea-based wind towers.By 2020, the windswept country plans to get 50% of its energy fromwind power.
Now turbines are moving into the city and these ones will costless than half the price of those sea-based. Having the energyproduction closer makes it cheaper, and land-based turbines are thecheapest possible source of energy available today. Fixing themalso makes the locals more aware of their energy consumption.
Though considerably less attractive than it was in ancienttimes, the windmill is enjoying popularity in the 21st century.“Windmills are a symbol of the new and clean Copenhagen,” saysresident Susanne Sayers. Meanwhile, fellow Copenhagen citizen MariaAndersen worries about the noise, explaining that she wouldn’t wanta wind turbine in her neighbourhood. While Copenhagen citizensapprove of the windmills, they’re less willing to live close toone. The answer, the city has decided, is to sell turbineshares.
Each share represents 1,000 kW hours/year, with the profittax-free. With a typical Copenhagen household consuming 3,500 kWhours/year, a family buying four shares effectively owns its ownrenewable energy supply. To date, 500 residents have bought 2,500shares. Involving the local population was a smart move. “There area lot of things you can do close to people if it’s not too big andif there’s a model where locals feel involved and get to share inthe profit. Knowing that you, or your neighbours, own a technologycreates a very different atmosphere than if a multinational ownedit,” says Vad Mathiesen.
Going green? Yes. Accepted by the population? Yes. Going withcenturies-old city architecture? Hardly.
Certainly, the three turbines don’t exactly blight the18th-century city centre, as they are in a neighbourhood 3 km away.According to the mayor’s office, none of the remaining 97 turbineswill rise in architecturally sensitive areas. But SaschaHaselmayer, CEO of city creation group Citymart, warns, “WithDenmark being a world-leading producer of windmills, there is arisk that the answer to every energy question is windmills.”
“We’ve destroyed mountains and lakes in order to support ourlifestyle,” notes Irena Bauman, an architect and professor atSheffield University. “Wind turbines are a sign that we’re learningto live with nature. I hope we’ll have them all over the world,”she says. “They may be unpleasant to some, but better-looking oneswill come. It’s just that we don’t have time to wait for them!”

22.It was a weeknight. We were a half dozen guys in our lateteens, hanging around “the flat” — as usual. The flat was poorlyfurnished, which, after some time, grew tiresome. We wantedaction.
We got in a car, big enough for all of us to crowd into — andoff we went, in search of adventure. We soon found ourselves atBlue Gum Corner, a place named after the huge old blue gum treethat stood by there, a well-known local landmark. It stands at aminor crossroad leading to our town. The trunk is tall and smoothwith no handholds for climbing. About six metres from the groundthe first branch sticks out over the road. We parked beneath thehuge old tree and discussed what we might do. All of a sudden wehit upon an idea — a hanging! I was chosen as “hangee”.
The plan was quite simple. As I stood upon the roof of the car,the rope(绳子) was threaded down my jacket through my collar and downone leg of my jeans. I put my foot through the loop at the bottom. There I hung, still. The boys rolled about laughing until, a car, Ihear a car! Before they ran to hide in the nearby field, they gaveme a good push so that “the body” would swing as the car droveby.
To our disappointment, the car simply turned offfor town without even slowing. The boys came out of theirhiding places and we discussed the situation. Surely they had seenme, hadn’t they? Then we heard another car. The act was repeated, but still without any obvious reaction. We played the game aboutfive or six times, but as no one seemed to notice, we abandoned thetrick.
What we did not know was that every car that had passed hadunquestionably seen “the body” and each one, too scared to stop, had driven directly to the local Police Station. Now at that timeof the night, the local policeman was sound asleep in his bed, sothe first person sent to the scene was the traffic officer thathappened to be on duty that particular night. He had been informedthat some person had been killed, by hanging, at Blue Gum Corner. When he arrived, the body was gone! And he was hearing “unnaturalsounds” from the surrounding area. As far as he knew, some fierceanimal was hiding in the field before him, possibly dragging a bodybehind him — and we thought we were scared!
He went to his radio and made a call that really began to worryus. I lay so close that I could hear every word. He called for the“armed police” and a “dog team, better make it two” and he had a“serious situation” at Blue Gum Corner. Then the police officerarrived. After a briefing from the traffic officer he decided notto go into the field until armed police and dog teams arrived. Nowtwo spotlights were on the field and none of us could move.
As luck would have it, police cars cannot leave their spotlightson all night without charging their batteries. 24.People have wondered for a long time how their personalitiesand behaviors are formed. It’s not easy to explain why one personis intelligent and another is not, or why one is cooperative andanother is competitive.
Social scientists are, of course, extremely interested in thesetypes of question. They want to explain why we possess certaincharacteristics and exhibit certain behaviors. There are no clearanswers yet, but two distinct schools of thought on the matter havedeveloped. As one might expect, the two approaches are verydifferent from each other, and there is a great deal of debatebetween proponents of each theory. The argument is oftenconveniently referred to as nature vs. nurture.
Those who support the “nature” side of the conflict believe thatour personalities and behavior patterns are largely determined bybiological and genetic factors. That our environment has little, ifanything, to do with our abilities, characteristics and behavior iscentral to this theory. Taken to an extreme, this theory maintainsthat our behavior is predetermined(注定)to such a great degree thatwe are almost completely governed by our instincts(本能).
Proponents of the “nurture” theory, or, as they are oftencalled, behaviorists, claim that our environment is more importantthan our biologically based instincts in determining how we willact. Behaviorists see humans as beings whose behavior is almostcompletely shaped by their surroundings. Their view of the humanbeing is quite mechanistic; they maintain that, like machines, humans respond to environmental stimuli (something that helps sb./sth. to develop better and more quickly)as the basis of theirbehavior.
The social and political connections of these two theories aresignificant. In the United States, for example, blacks often scorebelow whites on standardized intelligent test. This leads some“nature” proponents to conclude that blacks are genetically worsethan whites. Behaviorists, in contrast, say that the differences inscores are due to the fact that blacks are often robbed of many ofthe educational and other environmental advantages that whitesenjoy, and that, as a result ,they do not develop the sameresponses that whites do.
Neither of these theories can yet fully explain human behavior. In fact, it is quite likely that the key to our behavior liessomewhere between these two extremes. That the argument willcontinue for a long time is certain.
32.【小题1】The author is mainly concerned about solving the problem.
A. why our personalities and behaviors differ
B. what makes different stages of intelligence

B. Environment has nothing to do with our personalities.
C. Abilities and characteristics are showed by behaviors.
D. Only extreme behaviors are determined by instincts.
35.【小题4】 What can we learn about the behaviorists?
A. They believe human beings are mechanical.
B. They compare our behaviors to the machines.
C. They suggest that we react to the environment as the machinesdo.
D. They agree that the mechanistic theory can be applied on usas well.

25.If you see a person carelessly throw a cigarette to theground, what are you likely to think?
If you hate people throwing things on the ground, you mightthink, “That person shouldn’t litter.” If you are a smoker, youmight think, “I would sure like a cigarette right now.”
Most likely, though, you are not thinking, “That unusedcigarette butt could be used to make something amazing!”
That is, unless you are a creative scientist. If you are, youmay see potential—a possibility—where others simply see trash(垃圾).That is just what has happened in South Korea.
The spirit of invention can hit at the strangest times and inthe most unusual places. In South Korea, it happened near a trashcan.
Kin Gil-Pyo is with the Seoul National University. He says hesaw people throwing away cigarette butts, which got him thinking. He began wondering if something useful could be made from them.
He and other researchers found a way to convert cigarette buttsinto materials required for high-performance batteries.
Kim Gil-Pyo says they looked closely at used cigarettefilters(滤嘴), the parts of cigarettes smokers put into their mouths.Filters are made of a material called “celluloseacetate(醋酸纤维素).”
Mr. Kim explains that cellulose acetate can be made into anothermaterial: carbon. The pieces of cellulose acetate, known as fibers, are changed through a one-step burning process. After this, theyare turned into an energy storage material.
But why use carbon? Carbon has many qualities that seem to makeit the perfect material. Carbon has a high surface area. Itconducts electricity well. It also stays stable, unlikely tochange, for a long time. And carbon does not cost a lot. All thesequalities make it the most popular material for makingsuper-capacitors(超级电容器).
Super-capacitors are good at storing energy. They havehigh-power mass, or density(密度). They require only a short time forrecharging. And they have a long lifecycle. Super-capacitors areused in products such as laptop computers and cell phones. They arealso used in industrial energy converters, like wind turbinemachines.
Combining carbon and super-capacitors seems like a perfectmarriage.
Kim Gil-Pyo tells the Reuters News Agency that cigarette buttscould affect the economy is a huge way. They could prove to be alow-cost source of carbon material. They are so cheap that smokersthrow them to the ground. And you don’t get much cheaper thanthat.
32.【小题1】What may people think seeing a person throw a cigaretteto the ground?
A.That all depends. B.He should be blamed.
C.It causes them to smoke. D.The butts can be reused.

A.is used as the battery surface B.can be turned intoelectricity

A.need quite a long time to recharge B.are comparatively veryexpensive

26. Since Henry Ford turned it into a mass-market product acentury ago, the car has delivered many benefits. It has promotedeconomic growth, increased social mobility and given people a lotof fun. But the car has also brought many problems. It pollutes theair, creates traffic jams and kills people. An astonishing 1.24million people die, and as many as 50 million are hurt, in roadaccidents each year.
Drivers and passengers waste around 90 billion hours in trafficjams each year. In some car-choked cities as much as a third of thepetrol used is burned by people looking for a space to park.
Fortunately, a new technology promises to make motoring safer, less polluting and less tendency to hold-ups. “Connectedcars”--which may eventually develop into driverless cars but forthe foreseeable future will still have a human at the wheel-cancommunicate wirelessly with each other and with traffic-managementsystems, avoid walkers and other vehicles and find open parkingspots.
Some parts of the transformation are already in place. Many newcars are already being fitted with equipment that lets them keeptheir distance and stay in a motorway automatically at a range ofspeeds. Soon, all new cars in Europe will have to be able to warnthe emergency services if their on-board sensors(传感器) discover acrash. Singapore has led the way with using variable tolls(道路通行费)to smooth traffic flows during rush-hours; Britain is pioneering“smart motorways”, whose speed limits vary constantly to achievea similar effect. Combined, these new inventions couldcreate a much more highly effective system in which cars and theirdrivers are constantly warned of dangers and showed the ways, traffic always flows at the proper speed and vehicles can travelcloser together, yet with less risk of crashing.
In the past, more people driving meant more roads, more jams, more death and more pollution. In future, the connected car couldoffer mankind the pleasures of the road with rather less of thepain.
【小题1】According to Paragraph 2, the problem of parking hasresulted in ______.
A. more time on the road B. a great waste of fuel
C. even heavier traffic jams D. increased death and injuries
【小题2】What does “a similar effect” in the Paragraph 4 referto?
A. Reducing traffic jams. B. Building smart motorways.
C. Setting proper speed limits. D. Keeping steady trafficflows.
