舒德干教授，1969年毕业于北京大学地质地理系古生物学专业；1981年获西北大地质系古生物学专业硕士学位；1987 年获中国地质大学（北京）地质系古生物学专业博士学位。德国洪堡学者和中国教育部“长江学者”；现任西北大学地质系和中国地质大学（北京）教授。近十余年来，在寒武大爆发和动物门类起源研究上取得了一系列重要成果，以第一作者在《Nature》和《Science》杂志上发表学术论文10 篇（含《Nature》的“ Article” 形式论文3 篇）；发现并论证了已知最古老的脊椎动物昆明鱼、海口鱼、钟键鱼、低等脊索动物华夏鳗、尾索动物长江海鞘、半索动物云南虫和海口虫、绝灭的后口动物门“古虫动物门”，以及棘皮动物始祖“古囊动物”；并基此提出了早期后口动物演化与脊椎动物起源的新假说。其成果被评为“1999 年中国十大科技进展”和“2001 年中国十大科技进展”。获“全国杰出专业技术人员”、“全国模范教师”、“全国优秀留学回国人员”、 “全国优秀科技工作者”等称号。获第二届 “长江学者成就奖” 一等奖、“国家自然科学奖”一等奖。
