Elsevier的标志原属于Elzevir printer并沿用至今，上面描绘了一个老人站在葡萄藤缠绕的榆树下，并题写了拉丁文Non Solus（不孤单）。它的含义至今仍存有争议。这个标志由Isaac Elzevir（Lowys的儿子）于1620年首次引入，并从此印在所有Elzevir的出版物上。毫无疑问，Elzevir家族对他们的标志充满自豪，其想要表达的含义却不为人知。虽然大多数学者认同榆树代表知识之树，他们对相互缠绕的葡萄藤的含义却无法达成共识。
巴黎图书管理员Adry在1806年提出，榆树和葡萄藤象征着Isaac和Abraham Elzevir兄弟之间的纽带，而那个老人，也就是隐者，象征着研究的隐秘性。现代艺术历史学家Lucy Schlüter则提出了一个更加令人信服的解释。她认为树下的老者代表一个智慧的学者、一个哲学家――令人想起Erasmus描绘的苏格拉底，坐在乡间的树下带来硕果累累、启发人心的演讲。
在这个意义上，相互缠绕的树和葡萄藤代表着一种产生果实的关系――因此也传达了一种寓意。如同Erasmus所言有关树和葡萄藤的传统隐喻：“正如葡萄藤，虽然在所有的树中最加出众，却仍然需要茎杆、树桩或者其他无法结实的树的支撑，强者和博学之人也需要平凡者的帮助。”
这样看来，这个标志代表着传统符号学中出版商和学者之间的象征关系。Non Solus的题词则更加强化了这一信息――学者需要出版商像榆树那样提供坚实的支撑，而出版商也同样需要葡萄藤来结出果实。出版商和学者都无法独立得到果实，他们都需要对方。这也恰当地表示了Elsevier和它的作者们如今的关系――不是依赖，不是被依赖，而是相互依存。

一月底，英国剑桥大学数学家、菲尔兹奖获得者Timothy Gowers公开宣布抵制 Elsevier ，而此前类似的举动只在私下开展。Timothy Gowers 对 Elsevier 的抵制行为很快就得到了众多科学家们的支持，一个用于宣传和签名的网站The Cost of Knowledge也被建立起来。在这个网站页面的显眼处，科学家们罗列了他们抵制 Elsevier 的原因：
